Why does South Africa set such low standards for everything?

This is a genuine question. And this seemed like the best place to ask it

It's like this country has the lowest bar for nearly everything, which makes it a pain to live here. I feel like I'm robbed of opportunities that I could have had if born/lived elsewhere.

For example:
1. Our high production TV series/films are mediocre - they're like TV movies in the US
And box office in this country is incredibly irrelevant

2. A decent music industry doesn't exist here - there are no famous festivals, there's minimal music coverage, and there isn't any creativity to music. I wish we could have bands like the Clash here in South Africa

3. Everything culturally is just dull. It's unlike the USA, where you'll find massive subgroups of people - hipsters, hippies, etc. It's like all the defining movements of generations occur there

4. I recently looked at video game sales, and over the course of several months, the amount of consoles sold in this country were a fraction of the amount sold in the US in 1!!

5. Lack of skyline, or skyline development in most cities. Taiwan, Thailand, and China all destroy us in that regard. Look at Shanghai! I wished I lived there! I wish I could see that here.

6. Our universities are quite lame compared to the ones you find overseas. Only UCT ranks internationally. And, besides none of the unis here are privately funded, can you imagine?

This is just a tiny representation of how low standards are here. It's like there isn't a feeling in this country that we should strive for greatness, to push ourselves beyond any fathomable limits, and it's like everyone's just okay with this mediocrity, or averageness.

But really, why it really upsets me is because I want to be a web developer/internet entrepreneur, and it's just so disappointing. I look at Silicon Valley, and then I look here, and it's an utter joke. It's honestly like nobody *****ing tries here.

There are only 5 million internet users here, a 10% penetration, versus America's 80%
Internet companies there get billion dollar valuations, and get sold for similar amounts - Instagram, Waze, Tumblr
And I'm *****ing stuck here, where I'll never reach a satisfying level.

I'm jealous of Americans. They come from a history of innovation and excellence. It's like everything happens there. It'd be so cool to know that a billion dollar company was started in your city, neighbourhood, or street by someone just like you. I'm so jealous.

Why isn't it like that here? Why can't South Africans be leaders? Do you ever feel grated by this country's lack of distinguishment?

I like this country, but I just wish it wouldn't limit me.

You're limiting yourself. If you can't make it here there's no way you'd make it anywhere else.

I'd have to disagree. I think the US offers a lot more opportunities. It's easier to start something there and have it quickly develop

Why do you think its easier in the US?

I think an entrepreneurial spirit is more fostered there. And the fact that Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Google etc. are all American
So I guess everyone just feels more assured. And there's much more money to invest and people willing to invest, and there is a lot of programming/technical talent.

It's just a better place for innovation. There's a lot of competition too, so it keeps people at their best.

I don't know if I've explained it well

You are limited, not because of the country that you live in, but by the fact that you're a pessimist.

You could be great, if you believe in grand and novel things, yet you create an entire post full of excuses of why you aren't.

Pleasure. If you can, you should live in a few countries and see where you feel happy. Who knows, you may come back in a few years, buy a house in Camps Bay for $100mil, whilst starting business here, to inspire greatness in South Africans.

Then again, you may decide to inspire others to greatness, building the networks and skylines you want, without leaving...

You're forgetting quite a few things.

The US has 6 times our population for one. They also probably have more than 20 times the tax payers. This government likes keeping people poor.

Just those two things answer all your issues. As there are so many unemployed people, there just isn't a market for all those awesome things.

To get anywhere you need to be an entrepreneur.

What stops you from being a web developer/internet entrepreneur?

I don't think that's true. This country really does limit me. And I AM confident in what I can accomplish, but it just can't be accomplished here.

I'm inspired by Americans and their standards, not what's done here.

Yeah, I think I'm going to go with the first option and try San Francisco for a while, and then I might come back and do the rest

I guess that could contribute but I still think South Africa lacks the same intensity of innovation and we generally don't have anywhere close the drive to succeed

What stops you from being a web developer/internet entrepreneur?

It's just the limited opportunity here. It's visible from the lack of internet/web companies, investment and internet users

I'd have to go to San Francisco but it's expensive, and green cards are difficult to get. It makes it a lot more difficult for me to succeed than an American who already lives near Silicon Valley

Now you're starting to sound like a troll.

Steve Jobs is considered a hero, and one of the greatest minds of our time. Then there's Bill Gates, the wealthiest man alive. Steve Wozniak, Mark Zuckerberg (the second youngest billionaire alive), Jack Dorsey, Sergey Brin & Larry Page, Marissa Mayer.

I could go on and on

They have lots of inspiring tech figures

And they started the PC revolution!

Happy 4th of July!

Lol, I do like South Africa a lot, but Americans simply beat us is all
