Why domestic workers should be paid at least R40 an hour in South Africa

Frankly if you want private citizens to pay domestics as if they are employees, then the private citizens should be able to offset their tax responsibilities in the same way companies are able to.
And it is not just pay, it is all responsibilities as an employer - like UIF and OHS - with no benefit to the employer

... or bite the bullet and clean after yourself (also a great opportunity, if you have kids, to teach them about being responsible and working together as a family). 2 Years ago our budget/economy forced us to take this route, and to be honest I don't think we will ever go back to employing someone in our household.

I need to be careful how I answer this. I'm not a great cook, but I can't see how you would stick a slice of bread with egg on top in the airfryer.
I have taught the Philips clowns that years ago in the Philips thread, Even pics of the process. You would need a proper size non Philips air fryer if you want to make more than one at a time.

Isn't there something about if they're hurt while working at your house it's your problem - or is that OHS?

Yeah I think that is part of Occupational Health and Safety. Basically if there is anything on your property that can injure the employee, you have a responsibility to sort it, like a loose step on a staircase that could cause them to trip and fall.

Well apart from adding that you can indeed do egg in the nest in an airfryer.

Maid currently gets around R37/h for 4 and a half days a week
Gardener gets around R38/h for 1 and a half days a week.

If I had to take into account that both normally pitch up late and leave early they'd be in excess of the R40/h. This doesn't take into account meals etc tlyet though.

I'd support increasing what I pay both of them though if I could get the tax deduction.

Which is why employing a domestic worker is a purely voluntary decision.
What idjiots like you don't understand is that if you make it too cumbersome, less money gets distributed through the economy. More people go to bed hungry.

We do everything ourselves. Have a gardener come in twice a month but that's it.

Last domestic worker we had we let go because she was working like her arse. After she left we noticed things that went missing, like my wife's previous phone.

We decided to just do it ourselves. House is always clean.

R40/hr sounds fair but then she better have the house sparkling in 5hrs with no smoke breaks.

I think you may find that people who can't perform a simple task like ensuring UIF is paid across, may just be the idiots.

Day to day life must be a challenge for them. Perhaps they don't drive cars either because licencing them every year is a hassle. Abolish licence fees and car sales would rocket. No car salesmen would go to bed hungry.
