Probably bundled with DSTv subscription at reduced fee. So it increases your overall DSTv bill, but you'll maybe pay R39 less for Netflix.

AFAIK their decoders are already struggling with the demands placed on them. Not sure this will make sense, unless they roll out new decoders.
Newer decoders, it won't be rolled out on the exploras

Can you imagine how crap and slow the Netflix interface must be on the decoder?

I pay R139 for Netflix, can DStv beat that price, then how is this great news?
Quite possible they will. Netflix knows Dstv isn't really their market and people won't leave their usual subscription for Dstv so there will be some incentives.

You really think Multichoice with a market cap of $3.5 Billion can strong arm Netflix with a market cap of $210 Billion?
Market caps mean nothing. Dstv literally makes infinitely more profit than Netflix.

But they are. Same thing they do every year.

Really? DSTV> WTH has DSTV in this day & age? They're so 90's. A friend on mine said that apparently DSTV's Showmax is shite. Takes forever to download, Netflix no problem. Don't know or care. Ex cit. Can't believe it.

This would be a boon bar none if you could access the other services through DStv's satellites. Plausible?

Why DStv's big Netflix deal is great news

MultiChoice's deals with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video could benefit South Africans and may bolster competition in the entertainment industry.

The company announced back in June that it secured agreements with the streaming heavyweights to integrate their services on its new Explora decoder.
No it is not great news for us. Multichoice buys sole broadcasting rights on certain items and thus excludes access to their non-subsccribers. They also use their power to participate in politics by withholding shows with “banned” participants, thus affecting the income of non-banned participants. This is just like the past, freedom of speech is under political control and Multichoice is used as the tool.

It's not a stupid move IMO. But it's not great news for the customer.

Most devices used to stream Netflix/Prime cost around R1000, same as a DStv decoder.
So if MC can get you to still subscribe to their product, with hardware that allows to to add-on your other streaming subscriptions, it's a win for them.

They'll use the capability to also track what you're watching when you're not watching DStv...
