a Friend teached me, every time I am going to do a job and don't have the correct tools, buy it.

Since Cov I used my fuel money to buy tools, now I got used to it, and realised how much money I waisted on fuel.
-I had zero problems with a new vehicle that never seen a dealer since I bought it, I just did the maintanance(Japanese). I had the most problems with a german car that seen the dealer regularly, the saleman told me I should never open the bonnet, eventually I did..I went back to Japanese, so far its holding up good.
The german thing I keep till it breaks catostrophic, then I am going to have fun with it and my tools.

with the opel I had to buy allen key socket for the brakes, with the Ford a 7mm allen socket also for the brakes.

I generally hate working on my cars but it can save a lot of money so I do it on occasion.

What annoys me the most is people who don't want to lift a finger yet moan when someone wants to charge them to do the work, a friend of mine was complaining because someone wants to charge them R400 to do the brake pads.

Exactly. Dealer charges about R4K for my Honda brakepad replacement, my Mechanic comes in at about R1100. If I do it myself it costs me R600 and takes under an hour. At that rate I am willing to do it myself.

Who doesn't have a 7mm allen key in their garage as a standard item anyway?

The Megane had this weird sump plug. Like an allen bolt, but square. Can only get the correct bit for it at the dealer. I simply ground a 14mm allen key square. Nothing like making your own tools.

Ha! Spent a day trying to replace almost every electrical part on my wifes car relating to the brakes. Cleaned connections replaced every slightly dodgy looking wire, and everytime we tested it, the lights still wouldn't come on.

Spoiler, she was depressing the clutch.

Even if you know exactly how to do the job and have all the tools, if there's 4 items you have to change, 3 will work just fine and that last one will mess you around.

*Edit - I do like working on cars but man it can frustrate you.

I often say, the right tools for the job make a world of difference.

I think the 1st job I tired was replacing the O2 sensors on a volvo, took me an awful long time.

Personally I like the idea of working on my cars and bikes and I have definitely felt the satisfaction of completing a job with my hands but I think I just suck at mechanical work because I always fix one thing while breaking three others.

'Oh, I needed to get this cover off over here but one of the nuts was stripped so I've had to strip the entire engine to get to the other side and now I'm totally fscked... but just let me finish this youtube video about dropping the gearbox out of one of these babies and I'll have it all sorted' ...is basically how it tends to go.

I do a lot of delicate electronics stuff myself and I don't have the same problem there.

In the daze of yore - I'm giving my age away here but it was when mechanics could read :) - one could purchase genuine from-the-factory maintenance manuals for most cars. Saved hours ...

If I can have a hoist in my carage without pushing the car through the roof, I can do a lot more on the German-EU pos thats low to the ground.

I bought the Haynes manual for each of my cars (except the current - not available). So incredibly handy for all the little jobs where you're not sure where something it, or how to get it out.

One manual had the instructions for doing the clutch on a Mondeo. The recommended dealership/expert way is to drop the front subframe, and then get the gearbox off. For the amateur mechanic, they recommended pulling the entire engine out the top, and taking the gearbox off on a bench. It's an utterly **** job.
