Haynes Manual saved my day: Auto gearbox and a broomstick, open heart surgery.

Just after leaving school, a schoolfriend's father ask me to overall his VW Variant automatic engine by replacing pistons and barrels(Car weak and smoke), so I agree, my fathers garage was the place. I bought a haynes manual. In short everything went good till.....I thought I hate this job....

When I replaced the engine it hesitate to go that last 1/4 inch, so what the hell, I tighten the bolts, it then slip in.
Then the fun starts-Part-1:
Starting the engine, all good, I put it in drive=Nothing happens....I broke the car.
After some serious thinking and looking at the manual which had some photos of the gearbox, I see a very small like gear at the very end rear side of it driving the gearbox oil pump, maybe I crashed that.
So I took the engine and gearbox out. I decided to take the gearbox apart, arranging the parts on a broomstick on a table as I remove it. Ok so I did broke that part driving the pump. A new one cost like R25.00.
Got one and replace it. By this time I had a clue on the inside, did not took the valvebody apart.
Ok, so I assemble everything and put gearbox and engine back, carefull this time, nothing broke.

Then the fun starts Part-2:
So I start engine, put it in drive, yes it go, Reverse, yes it go.
I took it for a drive down the road, and nearly had a stroke when it accellerates past 1st gear and when it hit second, it like freeze in its tracks, what now.....ok, Neutral, 1st gear and reverse still worked, so I drove back in 1st gear, but it refuse 2nd gear.
Another learning opertunity cost free, just hard labour again.....
So after studing the manual, and knowing the inside of the gearbox, I decided I made a mistake assembling the gearbox vertically on the table, so there were 2 bands like brake bands inside the box, and they slipped scew and jammed.
Without removing the box, I completely released those adjustments, and the bands fall right on the inside.
This fixed the problem. This all happened over 3 days and I think I was lucky not having my father buying this man another car.

So I learned just out of school never to force a mechanical thing with moving parts/gears unless it say pressfit to a single part.

At least i have another to use to get parts and i can afford for the Uno to be off the road while i do the Job.

Yes
Tools are extremely important plus i need to invest in a Torque wrench for the flywheel bolts.
