So I just saw a Update guide for HTC and I am amazed by the number of devices. I have a Desire HD so I'm stoked that it will receive a official ICS update. Now I am in the position where I must choose between the One X and the Galaxy S III. I want to go for the Samsung because of the large replaceable battery, because I feel that battery life is more important than a beautiful phone.

The thing is, I am kind of worried that Samsung has decided not to update the original Galaxy S. The Galaxy S and the Desire HD are the same generation, so I HTC can update its phone, why can't Samsung. HTC also (sort of) unlock the bootloader on its devices so if your device is not updated in the future you can hop onto XDA and do it yourself.

I'm afraid that Samsung forgets about me in a year or so and only cares about its then flagship device. I don't really care because I will probably root my phone anyway and install a custom ROM. I suppose its just a moral problem that I have with Samsung because the original Galaxy can easily run ICS, if the Desire C with a 600Mhz processor can run ICS and Sense 4.0 then the Galaxy can definitively run it. It is also not as if Samsung has a lack of resources.

Am I crazy to not trust Samsung because very likely my phone can be left in the dark in a years time?

I find htc support crap - chances are my next phone won't be a htc

Is the sensation on ICS, because that is more comparable to the s2.

The HTC desire was the same generation as the galaxy s 1. Does the desire have ICS? It almost didn't even get gingerbread!

I have the Desire and we are still stuck on Froyo :-(

That and the pathetic amount of RAM make me not want a replacement HTC. The precieved quality of the HTC phones of course are streets ahead of the Samsung ones in my opinion. This was the reason I chose it over the S1 at the time.

Desire HD is comparable to the Galaxy s 1. Not the normal Desire.

I also have the Desire HD, and because HTC decided to update it my next phone will also be a HTC. And like with every new phone, it gets complaints about battery life, same with the Desire HD. Weirdly I have never experienced this.

I disagree, I would say the desire is far more comparable to the galaxy S than the Desire HD...

The Desire shipped in March 2010 with eclair and later got the upgrade to froyo and then gingerbread {heavily stripped down}, the galaxy S shipped in June 2010 with eclair and later got the upgrade to froyo and then gingerbread, the desire HD shipped in october 2010 with first froyo {but then later models shipped with gingerbread} and is getting the upgrade to ICS.

In terms of specs they all much of a muchness except the galaxy S {at 2 GB} has a larger ROM than the desire {512 MB} and even the desire HD {1.5 GB}, I believe the reason HTC said they can't update the original desire with gingerbread was because the ROM was to small for the OS {with sense installed} however the desire HD has 768 MB Ram vs the desire's 576 MB and the galaxy S's 512MB.

The GPU on the galaxy S is probably the best of the bunch but the processor's are also all much of a muchness, otherwise the specs are tit for tat.

However the most important part is the original version of android the phone shipped with, the desire and galaxy S both got two major OS upgrades the Desire HD is getting two for the very few phones that shipped with froyo otherwise it's only getting one {I sincerly doubt it will get the jellybean upgrade}.

tiaanels...I don't think you have to worry about the S3 not receiving update love from Samsung. It is probably going to be the most, or second most (after S2) popular Android phone of all time, there will be so much demand for the updates!

Like you said, custom ROM's are the way to go anyway. They incorporate receive the Android updates faster and run more smoothly. Then you definitely can't go wrong with the S3, which will probably have a bigger developer support base than the One X, although that is just my amateur opinion. I really like the One X, I think both phones are great.
