Why is it so hard at the moment to find small dual-sport motorcycles?

So I've been on the hunt for a new or used Honda CRF250L or CRF300L. Phoned every Honda dealer I can find in the Cape Town area, all sold out and no stock coming for a while. Looked on Gumtree, OLX, etc, and nothing second-hand. Why is there such a shortage of these kinds of bikes at the moment? I've already got a large adventure bike (BMW R1200GS), but I want something smaller for proper offroad riding. The BMW is just too much of a beast for me to comfortably take offroad.
