Why is shopping in the Waterfront such a miserable experience at night?

Okay I guess shop staff must be tired but some of us only have a chance to shop late and the Waterfront stays open til nine. I needed to get the kid a pair of takkies and you know these things aren't cheap. You can score a decent pair of cape Union Mart hiking boots for yourself for less than a pair of designer takkies for 8 year olds. Prices aside, it just seems people dont want to be bothered to serve you. Some stores didn't even have a measure thingy for the foot.
Some stores were crazy priced. But the staff I mean really, I've been in Funeral homes and I've had better responses from corpses in a caskets. At least the casket judders when you knock it... But some BEE employees can't be arrsed to help so the stressful shopping experience becomes a DIY exercise. Yep an empty store and all standing around looking mega bored. I just moved on and found a store that wasn't too bad but even houseplants after a decent watering have more enthusisam, maybe they earn too little to want to serve or maybe they're too tired to care, But its a lot of money (to me) and you'd expect just a little service- is that too much to ask? Kudos anyway to the guy who slipped in an extra gift. It was appreciated.
I also discovered if you have the misfortune or fortune of being in the waterfront just before 9, Pick and pay is desperate to unload their sushi. So it's buy any one and get the other free. Good deal R100 worth of sushi for R30.
makes up for all the retail "therapy "

First time buying shoes for the kid? Why you need measuring tools? Just measure foot on bottom of shoe, try it on, feel toes at the front of shoe, go bigger or smaller and so forth.

As for lazy, bored and bad staff....it's a South African service culture of "I don't give a f.... because I get paid at the end of the month anyhoot, so take your takkies and gtfo" . Or as Walter would say "Welcome to Walmart...."

A fuucking shoe store ought to have a measuring device. People have different sized feet and shoes have different widths.
kids growing so quick that you'd be a half baked fool not to measure to check they wont outgrow in 3 months. Last time I checked 1k notes don't grow on trees.
The waterfront is the Capes" national key retail point" for the foreigner. We can offer better than that BEE service. It's embarassing.

I totally agree with Visrot, It is a S.A. thing! Century City same thing. An assistant stood talking to man friend and would not get out of the way so I could look at the merchandise.

Yep , experienced this more times than care to remember

S.A. seems to funtion on the delusion that delivery of a service equates to service delivery.

So if the businesses are paying over a percentage of their turnover to Management on a monthly basis why don't Waterfront Management open their Gobs and do something about it? Instead, they take home big fancy cheques and bury their heads in the sand until the next high profile theft or catastophe, but do they realise they are getting shafted by their tenants? Their own revenue streams are being throttled by every customer who walks out of a store due to non service? Nah they don't care do they. Now Ownership is back in SA hands.

I had tons of fun a decade ago... except the crazy lady who chased me out of her shop
Anyway I went to the rondebosch pnp and their sushi was pretty good
then I went to claremont and I died of nuclear contamination
Maybe my local pnp does sushi... I`l take my chances :D

Update: My little one refused to eat the bargain basement PnP Sushi. Only three sushi places in town and one chain store with a W and One Fishy Restuarant franchise with the initials OB pass her quality test.
The dogs had a sushi supper.:D

I know what you mean about the shoe buying experience.

I've found the staff at the big chains (edgars, etc) DGaFF - at Canal Walk I got good service @ TotalSports after walking out of two other shops.

They earn a very basic salary, so they honestly don't care. In addition, that is the general attitude everywhere, not just at waterfront.

For some reason, foreigners would receive better service.

edgars staff are generally f***ing useless
not just in ct
the only exception being melrose arch
buying shoes at edgars is worse than going to the dentist
