Why is the MTN website so rubbish?

The MTN website is completely incoherent. The design is shocking, the pages are non-sensical, and the general look and feel of the website makes you feel as if a 5-year old designed it. Trying to find even basic information about their offerings makes you want to bash your head into your desk.

How can a company with so much money have such a rubbish website?

I had the same experience.

I believe that it is part of MTN's plan to demonstrate their arrogance towards the customer. If I am correct, they are succeeding.

I was looking for pricing on a phone and had no alternative but to simply not consider MTN.

I can also remember looking for some info and in the end giving up and going to Vodacom. This was some time ago, but nothing has changed.

Online chat from the website is bad as well.

Every interaction i had with an agent , i was told to call the call centre as they were not clued up on prices.

Mtn is getting pathetic.

Agree 100%. Last night I went to mtn.co.za on my wireless Nexus 10 tablet and it redirects me to a page saying WAP is not set up on my mobile device and prompted for a mobile number so it could send the settings to my device.

I get the same error when browsing from my Android phone... it's hilarious.

Try their call centre in Canal Walk (where you hand your faulty cellphone in). Disgusting.

MTN cares about one thing and one thing only $$$

Isn't MTNs website running on Sharepoint ? That might explain a few design choices. They probably created a global sharepoint template and since then been fiddling with Sharepoint apps . I won't be surprised if the skills and expertise to maintain and redesign the site to be more functional is just not there as opposed to using more of the other standard web technologies which are less reliant on Sharepoint as a base platform.

Even where i work, we have Sharepoint as intranet, but i was never comfortable with pointing this outwards to the internet and using it as a "consumer" or "retail" platform (as opposed to using it as a document management platform) . I'm sure it's capable, but all the tools and components out there to rapidly develop specific types of client facing websites is most likely not found under Sharepoint tools.

Plus, chances are MTN is still on Sharepoint 2007 (or older), when Sharepoint 2013 is already available.

I think the truth is that MTN has always targeted a more, shall we say, poorer clientele. It's obvious from their website that they don't consider it to be an important sales channel, otherwise they'd invest money into making it usable. Probably the majority of their customers don't even use the internet.

Maybe they also paid the same people to design there website that designed a certain government website that cost ± R140M and they didn't pay it all

Agree. Almost as bad as the Nandos website. Can't understand why south African companies can't get their online strategies right.

Cell C is good. Even 8ta's not bad. Kalahari sucks.

The web site reflects the attitude/quality of the company ... , the companies web site sucks, then so does the company ...
