You forgot about crazybump, lithuwrap, use softimage personally but that is EOL now :(

Pixplant for creating seamless textures.

Gimp, seriously best tool to create layer and alpha channel maps with.

Audio convertors, audio editors and recorders. My toolset alone is about 20 gigs, 100gigs if you include texture and audio library.

Added a Lua IDE recently since my engine switched to that now :(

I compare this to:

Why race cars instead of making them
Why watch films instead of making them
Why read books instead of making them

add 100 more etc etc

It really seems like a silly question to me.

I used to think computer games were too dumb to actually waste my time making one. I still think that.

No money in it IMO.
I average $300 to $500 a month on game dev stuff, still chomp change, it pays for my hobby and for my hardware upgrades and steam games ect. Have almost enough to buy 3D max 2014 edition.

Considering I am getting paid for a side job/hobby now, is a bonus, it did however mean having to market my self over an extended period of time but it is worth it completely.

Ther are so many game engines, it's not funny. Also have a look at cocos2d. They have a separate one for mobile as well.
