Why South African banks limit your transaction history

I would say that it might be related to a storage problem, thus historical transaction entries are moved to an archive of some sorts.

That is the only reason I can think of, then they decided to charge a client to retrieve the data from the archive.

This is exactly why, their systems are so slow and badly designed with everything running on rusty old Oracle databases that they can't query old transactions without running a batch job which impacts running transactions.

This seems pretty close to the truth.
