Why Telkom is cutting jobs

Telkom has been forced to cut jobs because of weak economic conditions, a decline in fixed-line voice revenue, and the migration from fixed to mobile data products.

This is according to Mooketsi Mocumi, the executive for Group Communication at Telkom who was speaking to the SABC.

you sound like eskom.
not selling enough because everything is broken so you increase price to compensate losses then you loose more because higher price reduce demand.
with telkom, lets cut off adsl, loose money in the process, now you have to retrench.
i've read somewhere that they is no difference between a psychopath and a business executive.

Maseko and them got greedy or it was by design to enable them to justify retrenchments. I see they have increased line rental for the remaining fixed line customers.

“Why Telkom wants to cut jobs”
Is it because you need no staff to supply no products to your zero customers?

The trade union added that Telkom cannot pay its executive team more than R100 million and then get rid of 3,000 of its employees.
Taken from the article, can't the journalist get more context?
The R100 million how much is Salary, bonuses and share incentive?
How many executives are in that figure?
Is Telkom going to retrench any executives involved with the parts of Telkom being closed?
There are so many unanswered questions that this just confuses me rather enlightens me.

Telkom is bloated like Eskom. Unions seem unable to understand this. Training redundant staff isn't the solution and will simply exacerbate the problem.

He said Telkom’s management “is eager to just dismiss workers”, which demonstrates that the privatization of state-owned enterprise yields no results.
So Telkom keeps asking for handouts being an albatross around tax payers' necks?

I did the figures and it's just over R10k per current staff. So not even one month's salary. I'm sure the staff also got bonuses.

You are so far off. They still have a lot of customers, even if you think they have no customers. Just because they are cutting off DSL doesn't mean they don't have any customers.

i am not even going to read the article

Facts, something we care very little for when we want to tell tales on MyBb.

To add: I went from ADSL to Rain and got shystered by them. Then to Cell C - ditto. Then to Supersonic ...and found Telkom is actually faster.
This is all fixed Lte cause the useless fibre twats stops a few streets away here in Jhb.
So, yes, many still use Telkom. I am one.

Their ADSL was good and the data cheap, I streamed all my home stuff from it. I was worried at the flippant manner in which they did not care about losing customers, after the cable was stolen no one cared to provide the fault update or proposed an alternative, I only learnt from their tech that they are not going to replace the cable. Only when I cancelled did they want to try and convince me to move to LTE, I wasn't interested since I am already on LTE with Telkom Mobile.

The bargaining unit (union employees) have enjoyed at least 6 to 7% increases every year, plus bonuses, plus incentive pay for good performance every single quarter, for more than 5 years now.

This maybe a good signs for people still with ADSL, maybe this will leave them short staffed for the decommissioning of copper lines process

i think they've stopped pulling lines out now that they've suddenly realised that they are pulling their bread and butter out the ground. i would really love to meet their strategy department.
