Why the government’s 20km/h slower speed limit is a bad idea

In SA the pedestrian crash fatalities are exceptionally high at 35-40% of road fatalities
Maybe pedestrians should stay off the freakin road? Nah, let's rather walk across the highway in the middle of the night. Besides, that newly built pedestrian bridge is like 500m away, that is so far!

The new proposals also include limiting the time that heavy vehicles, including trucks, will be allowed to operate. Roads in urban areas will be off limits to heavy vehicles between 06:00 and 09:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 on weekdays.

I like this one.

You mean taxis?;) Damn things by me always using the wrong side of the road and end up blocking traffic in both directions everyday in peak hour... no amount of metro presence and fining has stopped it (they actually seem to have given up)

It's a great idea, for them!

Think of the extra revenue and corruption?

I think in order for anyone to get a drivers license you need to get an IQ test done first.

That is far!...I see pedestrians ignoring the bridge that is 50m away.

Try watching guys running across a 5 lane freeway, right underneath the pedestrian bridge...

Those steps are just toooo much.... will ignore the huge bloody 10m deep gully between the different directions that they have to traverse.

Current speed limits are too difficult for metro to extort bribes; have to make things easier for them.

Had two guys run over the freeway underneath the pedestrian bridge the other day, it was dark and even darker under the bridge only saw them after it was too late. If it wasn't for brake assist, ABS and the guy's sheer running pace(he got quick real fast) he would have been a goner. I'm sorry it's hard to feel bad for the guys they really are asking for it.

OT but has anyone seen the pedestrian bridges at the new N2/Umgeni road junction. Who wants to lay a bet that they won't be used? Will give you some serious fitness if you do.

Africa time! We'll all (well, except for the taxi's) be having it ..

Wouldn't mind actually, getting older means I'll enjoy the slower pace.

Yup... saw it this weekend...

It def won't be used, but at the same time, I feel feathers for anyone killed at that interchange since the pedestrian bridge is there to make their lives safer.

It's a bit like saying that electricity can be dangerous so let's reduce the current.

The problem is not the speed limit it's the road users.
