Why the SABC wants Netflix users to pay for TV Licences

The answer is simple, noboy is prepared to pay for their content. Those that watch it, in the 'kasi, cannot pay for it, never mind a TV license. They only watch it because their TV's are mostly "free" and SABC is free, not because they think it is the best content available. Those that watch must pay. If they cannot then close up shop, and go home.

Hmmm.. So those that don't watch it subsidise those that do.

Why not, there is nothing stopping you from setting up a media server and starting a streaming service, oh other than your terrible content, but thats fair game in the industry where you dont get handouts and the customer decides who to support.

Honestly this whole thing a joke, scrap the TV license entirely, cut the fat and rely on ad revenue if ETV can do it so can you.

They cannot rely on revenue from advertising, as their audience in the 'Kasi, and and most advertisers have no common ground. So no or little funds for advertising on SABC - simple.

Yep, they want air travelers, to buy petrol for mini-bus taxis.

You don't ride in a mini-bus taxi, but you must pay for the fuel it uses. That is how their logic works.

Then how does ETV do it targeting the exact same target demographic?

Honestly if its a brand reputation thats keeping the advertisers away they need a serious restructure and trim down, its not the average joes problem that they have been mismanaging the station for decades, fire those involve and rebrand.

PS I dont know when last you checked but there are tons of satellite dishes in the Kasi these days ;)

Ha.. so you want an INTERNATIONAL company to collect your tv license. Traffic fines are in your country... big difference.

Hmm.. Not true. First.. people use their phones/tables to watch netflix. 2nd .. my TV isn't even connected to arial. I don't even have an arial on my roof.

Bunch of twats. Go and stand in soccer stadiums and collect your money.
Whats a TV ariel ?

Open View HD - buy decoder for R300.00 odd rands, and watch for free.

All that's going to happen is that those who have a TV Licence, will get the fee added to their annual bill, with the onus being on the licence holder to dispute or prove otherwise.

The rest will just merrily carry on as they were.

This request by the SABC is ridiculous to say the least. It is a thinly veiled greed that shines through, and typical of our corrupt society in South Africa. They have stolen the assets of SABC so much that it is broke, now they want to fix the SABC by stealing from people that have gone elsewhere to watch the quality shows that the SABC has failed to do. Pathetic. Corruption equals stealing.

You have a device with a wireless radio, which needs to be ICASA approved. That ICASA approval is included in the cost of the device. If you have a wired connection, the infrastructure is provided by an infrastructure provider with all the necessary licences etc issued by ICASA and government/municipality. You pay for the use of that monthly and cannot own it.

Said devices receives, and transmits, on a radio frequency which is licenced and approved by ICASA, already included in the cost of the device or via wired infrastructure in your home, which you own.

The content you access is created and supplied to you by companies who further pay fees/etc to Government and regulators for a licence/approval in order to supply content to you.

The SABC now want to you to pay them as well because....I'm not clear as to why, other than to get their cut of the fees?

When did Netflix start streaming SABC content? And SABC have tried (and failed) in the past to get DSTV to enforce TV license compliance and DSTV refused.

And where does Open Views money come from, R300 barely covers the cost of the dish and Decoder?

Advertising?

To be honest, I don't care, as I have no use for them either.

Buy decoder, plug it into a DSTV dish, with DSTV LNB, and it works, just supply electricity.

Why would Netflix drop their standards to stream this ****? Does the incompetent lot working in the SABC not realise we don't want it? No sense in forcing us to take it...

So wait, They don't actually want Netflix to get people to pay TV Licenses, they want Netflix to pay to get SABC content then?

Yeah, good luck on that front SABC. Netflix has standards.

Just another case of an incompetent government entity that cannot fulfill its mandate, and is now trying to force the private sector to do it for them.
