Why Vodacom M-Pesa flopped in South Africa

Capitec pretty much screwed up any chance they had. Once Capitec came into the market all the big banks started offering similar offerings to capture the unbanked low-income segment.
 
Regulation like FICA also makes it difficult to do something like this.
 
Also contributing factor is that in Swahili "pesa" means money. They should have changed the branding to work with South African, African languages.
