I'm really upset that I missed this yesterday.

You write articles about "douchenozzles" but nothing about the solstice? Seriously? Unacceptable. I demand to speak to the manager.

And don't tell me this is an IT site not a nature/science site!

I would have slept less had I known it was the shortest day of the year.

No, it was yesterday.

Yesterday indeed...

Summer officially kicks off today, with the summer solstice marking the longest day of the year on June 20, at least in the Northern Hemisphere.

This year's summer solstice takes place a day earlier than it's been for the past three years, due to the fact that 2012 is a leap year—this February got an extra day, to keep our calendar year of 365 days in sync with the astronomical year, which is about 365.24 days.

We had to make sure that Percy Jackson delivers the lightening first. Otherwise it would've been Atlantis for us.

Nope, GMT + 2
Nope, GMT + 1! Daylights savings remember.

I think, now I'm confused again. It varies between GMT+1 and GMT+2 throughout the year. I'm certain we're only 1 hour ahead of London right now.

Correct. They went from +2 to +1 in March/April.
Or well, we're always GMT+2 (no DST for us). GMT never moves. Just the countries' time zones. UK moves from 0 to +1.

We don't have day light savings, so we are always GMT + 2. GMT never changes.

We do not make use of daylight savings. We stay on GMT+2. Europe however makes use of it, and currently UK / Europe: Clocks on Summer (Daylight Saving) Time until: Sunday 28 October 2012 01:00 (1am) GMT. The solstice was on 20 June 2012 23:09 (11.09 pm)GMT. Oh I see, I don't use GMT then. I use London time (+1 or +2) because that way it's easier to know what time the football is broadcast locally.
