Why you need to stop giving money to beggars in South Africa

+1000. Please. It gives them incentive not to look for work as well. And it lures more and more of them.

My father in law once asked a beggar in Brakpan why she doesn't look for work, and she said she is making more money on the intersection than she would at a job. Well, not if people stop giving her money!

The sympathy card will always work on humans.

Then I'm not human. Neither is my wife. And she's one of the most caring (aliens?) you'll ever meet.

EDIT: Forum is in a double posting mood again today.

I've stopped giving. I used to really feel sorry for them, I still kinda do, but I don't give anymore. I always thought it must be so lowering to swallow your pride, stand at a robot and beg, but in our town it seems they've turned it into a job. They even take shifts.

I'll look at a beggar, how old is he/she? My domestic, when I still had her, was 62. If she can work they can also work. There are never really old beggars. If they're very old I'll give. IN Melville there is an old man, I always give him a couple of Rands when I go through there.

I must be honest, I have now stopped giving to beggars completely.

I remember a lady from a shelter told me that beggars don't come to shelters anymore as they prefer collecting money for all sorts of dirty habits out on the streets.

But I do feel terrible when I see a clearly disabled person begging i.e. no legs, missing arm etc.

Uhm, how about you do your jobs and start removing them from intersections instead of placing the blame on the citizens as usual?

I was at the corner of William Nicol and Republic and saw a perfectly healthy older lady begging. Decent/Warm enough clothes and a pair of blindingly clean white takkies, which was actually the first thing that caught my attention.

I was just thinking how she could not use this time to look for a job. Then I saw someone roll down their window and give her a R100 note. I expected her to flip out, do a happy dance, something - but she just took it, gestured 'thank you', and moved right along to the next car.

Easy money is easy.

You know it's a sad state of affairs when they have turf wars over busy insersections, like Old Paarl and Brackenfell Boulevard. :erm:

The latest trick is to get down on your knees at night and sit in-between the lanes on William Nicol. They'd be almost invisible if it wasn't for their tears glistening in your headlights.

really? I have only seen one beggar there, and that was on a sunday morning at 7am and I suspect she was more of a hooker.

I usually hear about kids being knocked down at that intersection.

Off Topic - Yoh, what about that bus last week! took the SO 2 hours to get home, and we live so close to the intersection.

Yep. The same woman is often around the Tygervalley area, middle aged blonde woman with what looks like an improperly healed broken leg/knee. Often there is a guy with her. She appeared at Brackenfell Boulevard, and another group of beggars (mainly white okes), came and chased them off. It was laughable and sad at the same time.

EDIT: I have to add, this was almost a year ago, and although I don't often see it, I assume that this won't be an isolated incident.

Haven't seen her. It was a coloured chick. That intersection is being kept clean now.

some of these people have been rehabilitated, cleaned up, given a roof over their head, a job, food. they refuse and walk away from it and go beg at the traffic light again.
