Perhaps he thought the warning to never spark a match at a petrol station was just an urban myth.

But this man certainly learnt his lesson when he apparently tried to light a cigarette - and nearly lost his life.

He had just purchased a package of cigarettes at a petrol station in Arizona as his friend pumped petrol into their SUV.

It is believed that the unnamed man then made the nearly-fatal mistake of trying to light a cigarette while standing next to his friend - still pumping the highly flammable gas into the car.

What happened next was caught on a surveillance camera at the petrol station in Chandler, Arizona.

A massive explosion engulfed the hapless man in flames, leaving him flailing about in terror until a quick-thinking petrol station employee managed to douse him in water.

I have lite many a cigi at a garage station but while i was in my car, i also would never lite a cigi with a match anywhere near a garage.

The cigi never caused this the match/lighter caused this.

as far as i know you throw a cigi onto the ground with petrol and it won't catch fire. Could be mistaken though :)

If this flaming human torch could not set the station on fire, what chance does a cigi have of doing it?

Wal......Thars an April fool if wanna see one!!!!

+1. Lighting one with a flame source, bad idea. You can smoke all you want at gas stations though. A cigarette can not light fuel. But yeah, keep 'em flames away from the pump.

I see this all the time at petrol stations. People standing right next to the attendant while smoking... or even worse pumping the gas themselves. But just you try to ask them to put out their cigarette! Whoa, you just became public enemy number one. Who the hell are you to tell them to put out their cigarette. When you point out the sign they look at it like it is one of those signs in the school hallway to be quiet. Flipping bloody Darwin candidates! When I see them I just hightail it out of there, even if I have to tell the attendant to stop pumping halfway. Let them burn themselves to hell.
