Hi there

Can you please rate your Wi-Fi or WISP connection on speed, stability and reliability? Do you get what you expected, or is your experience better or worse than what you expected?

It will be great if you can also tell us:

  • In which area/s you use your connection?
  • What can your WISP do to make you a happier customer?

Please post your comments in this thread (by posting your views you will stand a chance to win an iPad 2).

Durbanville, Cape Town.

They can lower their prices, it's very expensive.

Using Wireless Online. 2Mbps upload and download speed. 1:1 contention ratio. I'm getting 100% of speeds almost 100% of the time.

Paying R1,019 for 7Gb and then R149 per Gb top-up.

4 – Good (better than expected)

Telkom Wimax 512k down /256k up with Mweb Uncapped Adsl account.

Constant 60-70kb/s no matter when, (generally adsl 512k = 52-55 kb/s).
Latency - 40-50ms on locally hosted gaming servers.

•In which area/s you use your connection?
Douglasdale - Fourways.
•What can your WISP do to make you a happier customer?
Increase 512kbps to atleast 1024kbps :D

It has gone off once in the 2 years I've had it, so it's quite stable and obviously immune to cable thiefs.

WISP: www.skytec.co.za

Package: 512k wireless true uncapped (testing done on father in-law's 384k line below)

5 – Excellent (much better than expected)

Speed: 5 / 5
Stability: 5 / 5
Reliability: 5 / 5
Customer service: 5 / 5
Value for money: 4.5 / 5 (On the 512k package)

Area of use:
Amanzimtoti

Use of line:
online gaming, downloading large files, youtube, browsing.

What the ISP can do to make me happier:
Been waiting for the ISP to increase their speed for the 512k package for over a year now. The 256k users got punched up to 384k (which actually runs higher than normal...see speedtest below), and their pricing is almost half of the 512k users so the ISP needs to do something to strengthen the top packages as the price to speed ratio benefits the 384k users by a huge margin.

Other facts:
The package speed remains constant 24/7 regardless of the day or hour at which you run it. There is no shaping, throttling etc. Perfect WISP.

As for being a customer....the ISP makes you feel like a true customer and not just another number. Most ISP's should take note of this.

Mybroadband Speedtest (Local) 384k wireless

Test conducted on Saturday, March 03, 2012 2:07:28 PM
Download Speed: 553 kbps (69.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 222 kbps (27.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 70 ms

Mybroadband Speedtest (international) 384k wireless
Test conducted on Saturday, March 03, 2012 2:09:51 PM
Download Speed: 449 kbps (56.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 176 kbps (22 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 222 ms

I rated 4 for my Amobia 1mb uncapped @ R499 p/m. Absolutely brilliant service, I get the speed I pay for almost 100% of the time which is great for downloads. Latency is perfect between 30 - 60 when pinging saix.net and mweb :)

•In which area/s you use your connection?
Elandsfontein AH
•What can your WISP do to make you a happier customer?
Remove the occasional loss of service (usually during thunderstorms 0_o)

Package: Kawuleza "50Mb" Wifi

1 - Pathetic

Speed: 1 / 5
Stability: 1 / 5
Reliability: 1 / 5
Customer service: 1 / 5
Value for money: 1 / 5

Area of use:
Cape Town (CBD)

Use of line:
Business (https/voip/rdp)

What the ISP can do to make me happier:
Fix the packet-loss, get within errr let's say 40Mb of their supposed connection offer, pick up the phone when things go wrong

Other facts:
They're crap. Period.
We're a Tech support firm and they don't seem to get that we can see where things are going wrong.

I'm too embarrassed to post speed test results.
We're currently using our backup Mweb bonded solution with no probs.

Amobia Helderberg.
You get what you pay for. Up- and down-gradable with one month notice. 4 - Because they treated me like a dump fool during the installation phase. After that no complaints. Good speed and stability even during peak times.

Amobia 1Mbit Uncapped

Speed - 5. I get 100% advertised speed, however 0 for P2P and gaming.

Area - Johannesburg
What could make me happier - [-]Ease P2P throttling a bit and[/-] give option for public IP (majority of gaming services never get found) for extra fee.

Have you tested the below lately? Also no good doing speedtests to speedtest server as they are hosted by individual ISP's and only certain amount of bandwidth is allocated to that server, if 100 000 people are testing to the same as you the result with differ, set up iperf and test to an iperf server overseas! also try opening multiple streams with multiple computers and see what your speed is on your router!

Comtel Tempo Uncapped 1Mb/s (unshaped).

Speed - 99% of line speed achieved on tests and downloads
Reliability - No Major problems so far
Gaming - Swtor and wow 195ms average ping in raids and ops Don't play local games so no idea there but I do play mass effect 3 Multiplayer and I do get occasional lag but not enough to ruin gameplay (also I think its more an EA thing than a line thing)

Improvements
Price - I currently pay R1300 for the line and a drop in price would be welcome
Fair Usage Policy - Mine is set at 50 gigs and its fair but I when I reach it gaming is severly affected I would like them to maybe increase the line speed just a tad to enable gameplay at cap.

2Mbps Uncapped burst speed of 4Mbps @ R999.00 p/m excl. VAT
I get 4Mbps 90% of the time and never drops below 2Mbps

Good service (From Marius)
Recent upgrade also made a huge difference in speed.

Wish that they did not throttle after 120GB (though I must admint I rarely or never hit the throttle limit)

Last Speed test:

Test conducted on Mon May 14 2012 14:33:23 GMT+0200 (South Africa Standard Time)

Download Speed: 4068 kbps (508.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 63.5 kbps (55.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 32 ms

Would recommend for business
