Wi-Fi Router speed issues

Hi guys, I am just a geezer trying to figure out what to do about my line speeds.

After a few minutes, hours or days, my net speeds fall from about 7.5 mb/s ( I have a 10 mb/s line) down to around 1 mb/s with latency rising from 27ms to over 3000ms. If I reboot my N300 router it goes back up to normal speeds for a while.

right now it is ping 2023 ms, down 0.802 Mbps up 0.241 Mbps

the router is a NETGEAR DDG 2200

MWEB are my service provider and they have reset the socket a few times and any improvement is fleeting.

I have tried to download a dd-wrt firmware upgrade but I am using Apple and that seems to not be possible.

What next? Oh and if it is deemed that I need a new router what can you suggest. I live in a small home with two to four devices connected.

Warm Regards to you all.

Does the same issue occur when using a ethernet cable?

It varies from 9ms when it is working fine and 3400ms when it isn't. The download speed varies from 8Mb/s down to 0.01Mb/s
