Wifi issues with some devices

I've got a frustrating problem with my Toshiba Thrive tablet in that it's wifi capabilities don't seem to be very good. It was particularly noticeable while I was on holiday - the hotel wifi range was awful, but my phone could connect without a problem. The Thrive, though, struggled to connect and then kept dropping the connection.

I've noticed the same thing with other devices, where the signal isn't very strong, some devices will connect fine and others will struggle.

Is there anything that can be done? I'm guessing it's just a hardware limitation
