Erm...I think you mean that the Wii is the most popular NEXT GEN console. It can't compare to the PS2 or even Xbox 1 in sales yet...

I bought a Wii from Amazon 2 months ago and paid R2400 with import tax included. Nice going core. Although it will be easier to get hold of games and hardware now, so it's not all bad.

He says currency fluctuations, import taxes and the remoteness of SA from the world’s major business centres all contribute to the relatively high price not only of the Wii but of all imported consumer electronics goods sold in the country.

Sounds just like another monopoly we know :)

If the way that Core handles Apple's products is anything to go by, the Wii is doomed in this country. Nintendo stuffed up by giving distributorship to this bunch of idiots.

Currency fluctuations? Nope, you buy a batch and price it accordingly.
Import taxes? Yups.
Remoteness? HU. WHT is that?

Australia is even more remote than us - any idea on their pricing?

Also I thought that import duties were waived on electronics?

Don't buy the Wii now. Its been launched now for Christmas....If we all delayed our buy with 3 months..ie..buy in January of Feb, Core will be livid with the Wii stock pile-up in their back-yard. In order to get rid of them, Core will sell the Wii for R2300+2 games+accessories....

The Wii is 420 Aussie dollars which makes that about R2300 so clearly the remoteness is related to way South African companies rip off their customers...

Im comfused by the claims of importing is cheaper. I want a Nintendo Wii (PAL) but I don't see the point in importing at the moment.

It's £219.99 in the UK (amazon.co.uk)
and multiply by 14 (R14 rands to £1)
= R3066*

*That excludes delivery rates and the 10-20% extra customs may nail you for if they catch your delivery.

I'm all for paying less but where is the saving on a PAL version of the Wii. The problem here is the cost of living difference when comparing to the UK. Let's say you earn 1/2 or 2/3 of what you would do for the same job in the UK, then yes it is overpriced. But at the end of the day as with cars and TVs no company gives a crap and still charge what they do overseas no matter how much less money is worth here.

That is exactly what I thought before going to the launch yesterday, seriously this thing is just so much fun and as someone mentioned we are not really out of touch with the UK pricing...

You can't compare our pricing to that of the UK. They have far higher earning capacity. Take a look at something like MS Office, it's more expensive in the UK then the US.
