Will a widescreen (16:9) monitor fix my FOV issues?

Recently got into gaming again, new pc but still play on a non widescreen monitor. It's actually a 5:4 monitor, not even 4:3 (so it's even more square shaped).

Almost every game I play everything looks very zoomed in, it's making quite nauseous. Worst offenders are fps games. In Half Life 2 I had to go into the console to change my FOV to 106 degrees, this made it perfect.

I've just started Battlefield 3 however and even though there is a FOV slider in the menu it only goes up to 90 degrees, which is not enough, it still has that zoomed in look. So my question is: is it my monitor causing this? Will 90 degrees on a widescreen 16:9 monitor look right? (whereas it still looks zoomed in on my 5:4 monitor)

What size monitor do you have? I don't do gaming, but I would suggest investing in 16:9 monitor. You can pick up a brand new Samsung or LG 19" monitor for about R700-R800, and second hand ones are even cheaper.

Adjust the picture aspect control of the TV until it displays correctly

Had similar issue with previous 1280x1024(5:4) screen. Can confirm that 16:9 or 16:10 does indeed solve the problem.

Thanks, that's the exact resolution screen I have. Guess I'll have to get a new screen.

Where do you reccomend I get a secondhand screen? Money is tight.

The default FOV for call of duty games is 65 and if you do manage to go over 90 the game model will be distorted and the game will look funny...I can show you some screen shots of games on my 23" 16:9 screen if you want, so you can decide if it doesn't look 'zoomed in'.
