Will the SNO have to piggyback off telkom's infrastructure ? Hello Cell C, Virgin. They sure kicked a lot of ass with prices. Although in Virgin's defense, i am sure they would go against the flow as much as possible.

With all the copper owned by Telkom, Eskom, and Transtel (did I hear competition?) we will have to wait for the cable to be re-introduced into the system via the scrap merchants etc, before Telkom won't have that option by the balls. When the government was asked why it had such a high stake in Telkom, they replied, in case of emergencies like a tsunami. whew! thank god for that, at least we are safe from that.

Are there any bookies giving odds whether the SNO, will actually try to compete, or jump straight into bed with our happy anc enrichment fund. Imagine if the latter happened. How long would we would we have to hear why our crap broadband was always 10 years behind. Forever ?

Well they'll definitely have to piggy back off the local loop, until ICASA forces Telkom to unbundle it (read: never), that is unless they come up with something like Wimax for the last mile. Whether they'll actually compete is another story. As a business you'd expect them to undercut Telkom just enough to steal a significant amount of their market share. If Telkom then follows suit we might actually see a price war, but seeing as this is SA and they're basically 2 different parastatals we'll probably have to settle for high prices and collusion.

Considering Telkom has the taxpayers money (ala SAA) to wage a price war, guess who will win ? I am sure if a wireless solution is an option, Telkom will manage to control it in a way to control prices, frequencies, bandwidth, licenses. Let us not forget Telkom Apprufed.

Cell phone companies are different in that they depend on fix lines. Which are owned by telkom. So yeah, if telkoms prices drop we will see drops in the mobile area. yes no?

Not so, it operates on its own budget generated by revenues earned from its users, not money given to it by the government in a form of a subsidy

Lets not forget the billions of rands they screw out of us every year as profit and still have the gaul to tell us how expensive getting bandwidth to us is. BULL. I think they will keep us holding our ankles for as long as they like.

a lot of optimists say that SNOT will be using powerlines as their infra :p

I've been hearing about data thru the powerlines for a long time now. As far as I know the US isn't even doing it. Maybe because each state has its own independent power co.

Funny how the US can use twisted pair phone line just like ours and offer 3-7Mbs no cap to homes just like ours for about $50.00/month incl line charge.

Telkom can't play the 'the Nats left us with a ****ty infrastructure' anthem because the technology is new and rides on copper, same as the rest of the world.

I doubt that it's the Sno's interest to force he issue re last mile. Telcos make a far bigger profit on their backbone than they do at the consumer level.

The bulk high volume trafic sold to an MTN, Vodacom, Mnet, IS etc etc cst far fewer people nad infrastructure than does supporting 20 million end users.

So my guess is that we won't see Neotel in the last mile any time soon.
