Will this damage my on-board sound output?

Yes, now with 25w RMS Stereo Speakers. I want low volume from them, but I do not want to kill my thin client sound.

It's not the watt rating that really matters the impedance(ohms) is more important.
Those outputs are really meant for another amp or earphones(usually around 32 ohms).

As long as you don't constantly use it on max volume it should be fine though.

Seeing as most of the non-power computer speakers I have seen are 8 ohms I guess it should be ok.

So why not just buy a small pre-amp?
You can get a good pre-amp for under R600.
That will take care of any possible issues, if anything the capacitors will go in the preamp.

Just buy a small set of powered speakers (R50 to R150) and if you must attach the big speakers to their amp.

That will also work, yes.
:)

I generally prefer a more audiophile scenario but I guess he's not after anything special.

When I was a kid it was dad's old hifi speakers wired directly into moms old ghetto blaster and before that it was dads old 8 track wired directly into an old set of car speakers powered off an old model train power supply.

My last bought sound system died, I currently have an old hifi plugged into speakers from 3 other old hifi's (all **** from the garage) and am quite happy with the results  :whistling:

If it wasn't for the missus I'd probably still have all my old speakers and hifi bits and pieces somewhere. One of my more accomplished setups was an old car speaker mounted in a shoebox connected to an old car radio running on a converter that I found in my Dad's garage. It "pumped". Well, when there was a decent song on the radio that is :D

The main risk that could cause damage would be accidentally shorting the outputs - so solder carefully. Since this is chip based audio the outputs are probably protected (note the word probably).

If the speakers are within the rated impedance range for the output there should not be any problem in theory. Where the real world may catch up with you is that analogue electronics age and can suffer failure when placed under load.

I will go with the others in predicting no discernible sound or else something really distorted. Either cheap powered speakers or a second hand stereo amp may be more worthwhile than spending your time on this.
