Willie Roos quits

Test referee Willie Roos has resigned from refereeing, prompting Andre Watson, referees’ manager of the South African Rugby Union, to call on rugby supporters to return to traditional rugby values of respect towards officials.

Roos retired from refereeing after 15 years of training and experience after he was abused and had a drink flung in his face in Kimberley following a Currie Cup Premier Division match. Some supporters blamed Roos for Griquas’ defeat after they earned two yellow cards in the final 10 minutes and succumbed to a late score from the Blue Bulls.

I don't know if I should be sad or happy.

Yes he was a terrible referee at times but I still feel for the guy. It's not an easy job these guys have. Being judge by everyone.

All the best to Willie.

Now bring on that Daniels touch judge(female) that gave Anton v Zyl a yellow card last week.

Apparently he received it because of repeated infringements in the bedroom.

Easy for you to say... if you take up the wihistle, then only only can you comment! If not, please shut up...

Willie is not nearly a bad as you guys would like to believe!

Why cos' he is from where the bulls get screwed by the cows?

Yeah, he was not bad at all. He always/mostly made it to the bulls team as the 16'th player when he got to ref a Bulls VS Any-other game.

Would you say the same if it was someone that you thought incompetent? There are good refs and there are bad refs, neither deserve what Roos endured from that Griquas fan but am I sad to see a poor ref go? No.

I am sad for Ref. Roos to leave the game this. No matter whether he was a good or bad ref, the bottom line is that spectators need to respect the decisions made on the field.

The pressure on the refs must be enormous and they have split seconds to call on all the myriad of rugby laws and make decisions instantaneously. I certainly wouldn't want the job.

If the rogue spectators think they can do better ... then get off your fat beer lard @ss, put your money where your mouth is and you start being a ref.

+100! And that counts for you also M_H... If you guys are so good at it, why are you sitting on the sideline??

Remember this also before you ever lash out at a referee:
Laws of the Game 6.A.4(a) said:
The referee is the sole judge of fact and of Law during a match.

So we should all just accept what the government wants us to as well? Why don't some people get off their lazy asses and do something different in this country? See how easy it is to turn an argument around?

Now I'm not condoning what the fan did (per se), but if you **** up - deal with the consequences. Easy as that. If you can't handle making mistakes and being treated like that... you shouldn't be a ref.

Attacking a referee is disgraceful and they should have punished the home side by removing all spectators and SuperSport coverage for the next match or two.

Roos was no Andre Watson but he wasn't terrible. Both yellows and the red in that game were good calls.

Any guesses why I would like to bring this thread back to life after exactly 4 years?
