What would you guys consider to be a good investment at this stage.... which market that is currently very low will be the first one to curve up when the recession ends?

You gave up medical aid? That is not even an option in my books! Medical aid has saved me and my family thousands upon thousands! And that is excluding chronic benefits - that's just emergency room stuff / car accidents / sick children etc etc

Arent you worried that you may land in a crisis?
I agree there.. I was hardly ever sick, hardly went to see the doctor, and never went to the pharmacy. I thought my medical aid was a waste of time, and then last year I ended up being in surgery 7 times in 6 months.

If I never had medical aid, I would now be more than broke, I would of lost everything.

Medical aid is expensive....just do not fall pregnant.

I was with out one for years and had to go to PTA academic a few times. Not a bad hospital just be prepared to wait.

Then when you get an aid you love it so much more.

And i agree with pitbull, I still ahve a bit of debt but the major stuff is long gone and our house was just R320 000 when we bougth so i pay less for my house than most people do for a flat.

My share of my medical aid is just under R 3000 and I pay only 40% But I have to admit, I'm on the best medical aid money can buy

That is for myself the wife and 2 kids.

What do you mean about not falling pregnant?, with or without medical? My wife just lost her baby and that also would of cost me an arm and a leg for all the hospital fees when she was rushed through without medical.

I'm sitting in the same boat. Actually thinking of moving back to my folks farm right now as they have a spare house collecting dust and rent out my house for 3 times my bond repayments as thats the current going rate in my area.

Sounds like a plan.

That guys caught her with a trick :D

1. The pregnancy is excluded but the baby is covered if something should go wrong.
2. The baby will be on his medical aid no matter if he's married to the lady or not ;)

She got caught bad :p

Well, that will teach her not to put out on the first date and if she does, use protection and if she did, use more protection! :p

the best part was she lied about the due date to make herself look beter because she told everybody loud and clear that her believes would not make her put out before she gets married..... but she was a bit bigger than what was expected we told her she were having triplets......so the truth came out.!!! LOLZ!!

@ Pitbull. Really!!!!!!?????????? he works for the platinum mines and are on some sort of mine medical aid!

And she asked him to marryher cause she has 2 kids already ( she only has one with her) and doesn't want to have this one with out the pain drugs....
So i wonder if that would be covered?

Depends - my ex-wife joined a medical aid when she was pregnant, and they paid for everything.

I worked for Anglo American (Amplats) in Rustenburg a few years back.

I can tell you that he can afford to pay for the labour out of his pocket if need be ;)

But that aside, it might vary from medical aid to medical aid. as Moederloos said they covered his wife :)

we are hardly ever sick. and for now we have to take that risk. either we have a. medical aid, or b. food in the house

I think the choice is obvious

If the financial situation is that bad, then of course having food on the table is the obvious choice.

But for peeps who have more money to spend, the choice still is a difficult one -
a. should i pay every month and see the money "go down the drain" because I never get ill, or
b. should I take the risk and not have medical aid.

If such a person has an accident, or get ill, s/he will kick themselves for not having taken the medical aid.

I'll definitely be cutting back once I get back home. So no more parties, and nights out on the town. Will be staying home more, watching movies.

I'm ending my gym membership when it expires in Aug. I had a good run with Virgin, paying a flat rate for 2 years with access to all their gyms.

I take lunch to work instead of eating out everyday. I've lost weight and saved money from this. No more frequent R28 Tribeca cafe mochas either. No more drinks after work with the girls 3 nights a week. It helped me save on petrol too.

I learnt to do my own nails (saved R350 a week or fortnightly), do my own hair (thousands saved over a year) and I canceled my cheque card long before the financial crisis. I've never had a clothing or store account / credit card. That stuff is sinking a lot of my colleagues right now.

Entertainment wise we prefer d/led movies at home, house parties and making cocktails. The drinks & dinner bill for the 2 of us at Rhapsodys or something can cover a party & braai for 10 friends.
