I've been using these two desktop gadgets for about as long as they've been available. Although I know there is software to enable gadgets for Win 8 (not sure about Win 10), I was wondering if anybody knows of good alternatives to this kind of functionality without using gadgets, while still being easily accessible. Upgrading without these two will feel like I'm losing an eye! lol.

Maybe try...

Desktop gadgets and sidebar for Windows 10

Many people including myself still love the desktop gadgets that were introduced in Windows Vista. They were removed completely in Windows 8 which made many people unhappy. Microsoft wants to push live tiles as their replacement and therefore they claim Gadgets as insecure, just like they push Store apps over Desktop apps. If you cannot imagine the Desktop without your favorite gadgets, here is how to get them back again in Windows 10. Just follow this short tutorial.

I'm also using "8GadgetPack" in windows 10 with no issues.
I do notice that CPU usage is a little higher than Win8.1 seems to jump around on all cores 99% of the time and DWM.exe is the constant process.

Not sure if this is an issue on my PC as it keeps my I7 4790 clocked up to 4GHZ constantly :( I need to test disabling all desktop applications like gadgets, object dock etc.

I also use 7SideBar to ensure that the gadgets stay in their own defined area on the right/left of the screen.

What do you mean? The gagdets from 8Gadgetpack always stay in the spot you placed them, unless you move them manually.

7Sidebar creates a strip down the right hand side that other app windows dont overlap even if you maximise them - so your gadgets are always on top and unobscured.

Like so

Just a note, as I've found that 8gadgetpack slows down boot time somewhat, especially when Network Meter is implemented. A very useful alternative is http://rainmeter.net/ , especially when paired with the http://enigma.kaelri.com/downloads/ theme! It doesn't give nearly as much info as Network Meter, but it's just fine for my purposes, and loads quickly.

Also have a look at http://www.samurize.com/modules/news/ - a Rainmeter alternative that looks quite good.
