Hi there

MyBroadband has partnered with Lucidview to promote a really cool app called Gr8signal. The app shows and records signal strength, and then uses this information to create a coverage map for all South African cellular operators (available here: http://gr8signal.co.za/)

The information is completely anonymous, and the app uses very little data and other resources.

To enter the competition

If you do not own an Android smartphone, just grab an Android device from your buddy and install it on his phone or tablet PC

The winner will be announced on Thursday.

Similar to OpenSignal I suppose

Similar, but there are marked differences and gr8signal will hopefully give us more detailed coverage statistics in future.

OpenSignal doesn't seem to run in the background and doesn't let you see your own signal history, from what I can tell. It also doesn't seem to have a ranking of operators by coverage around you in the app. Give it a spin to see if those features are handy for you.

The feedback from the gr8signal guys is that unfortunately the APIs to let you get the cellular signal strength are restricted. You can use them but Apple won't let your app on the App Store if you do.

Loving the data as I already used the collected data to confirm I was sitting in a MTN dead spot last weekend.

Birthday party out on Beyers Naude at one of the garden centers.

Can't wait to collect data over the holidays.

Well done guys.
