I came here to unashamedly defend the average reviews garnered for WR. Approached this piece not long after another similarly themed cinematic masterpiece called "Hell or high Water"

Apart from No Country for Old Men can anyone here think of character driven movies either set it modern or Western /southern folklore?

In fact there might be some homages if, as a classic movie buff, you're familiar with Western hero's from popular culture.

I think it was good. I think the low reviews were because it was a bit slow for the Fast8 crowd that exists today

I don't see much/any defense of any criticisms put forth.

I really liked Hell or High Water, but I didn't particularly enjoy Wind River. It was certainly no masterpiece. The pacing was off, the characters were all a bit wooden, and the ending never really landed for me. Sorry, I'm quite tepid on it.
