Windows 10 and browser behavior. At my wits' end.

Hello. Welcome to my nightmare. Enjoy your stay.

Problem A:

The problem: When I select to download a file in any browser (Edge, FF or Chrome) it opens the file in said browser and does not prompt me to save the file. This problem did not exist on either Windows 7 or 8.1 which I ran on my two systems which I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. These are media files - .mkv, .mp3 etc. Programs download normally.

Both my installs were clean installs. I've cleared caches and done re-installs. I've made sure the check box for prompt for save location is checked. I've disabled all plug-ins. Problem persists.

I've found the solution for FireFox to be setting the flag 'media.play-stand-alone' to 'false'. Then it prompts me to save the file as previously under Windows 8.1 and 7. However for Chrome the problem persists. I use Chrome primarily.

Problem B:

Problem B is an extension of problem A. If I ALT-click or Right-Click Save As I can get the prompt to save the file. Dandy. However I've seen that once I click Save-As or ALT-click the file automatically starts to download in cache. Tested this with NetWorx open. Why is this then a problem if I want to download the file anyway? Because it happens when I click on a video file that is 4gb+ and want to schedule said download for after 00:00. Even if IDM intercepts the link - which it does - Chrome/FF/I.E still wants to download the whole file into cache. Only way to stop it is to kill the browser.

None of these problems exists under Windows 8.1 or 7. I am sure there is mere a setting somewhere that I am still unaware of, or a config to do with program defaults...but this is annoying as hell for me.

If anyone else have similar issues or have found a solution, please let me know.

If the above does not adequately describe the problem, please let me know where to elaborate.

I've googled and tried all of the workarounds I've found. Only the FF one worked. Now to fix Chrome and the downloading in cache.

Thanks for reading.

Did you download the Win10 via torrent or is it legit, be honest.

Any media player addins enabled in your browser. Try disable them.

these issues are only in MS edge, correct?

I would try DL firefox and use that, or chrome or safari (if you have to)!

otherwise, what happens if you open the site in IE 11? with the dropdown?

Zero plugins. This was encountered right after a fresh install. Tested on my HTPC - which has IDM and relates to Problem B - and my main PC which have zero media plugins.

I also tried it when I disabled the 4 plugins the that come native with Chrome. Problem persisted.

thanks for pointing it out, didnt see that....

updated win 10?

I have not run an update since Friday, but will run it again tonight to see if anything comes down or not. Could this be related to a previous update maybe?

In Chrome address bar type in
about:plugins
or
chrome://plugins

and paste the screenshot

Did you upgrade from 7 to 8.1 then upgrade to 10?

No I did not.

Created install media using the official MS tool found here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
When prompted for the serial key I used my Windows keys. Thankfully MS changed that in November it was no longer needed to first upgrade and only then be able to clean install. Your keys will work to activate 10 from a clean install without upgrading first now.

In retrospect I should have upgraded maybe :-/

EDIT: I upgraded one system from 8.1 -> 10 and the other from 7 -> 10. Both clean installs. Just wanted to clarify that.

NOTE: this is from my laptop not my PC's at home, but the screen looks the same with the same 4 plugins listed. I'll take a screenshot from my PC and upload that as well to prove they are the same.

However please proceed under the statement that this is what my screens at home look like as well. I have no damn reason to lie or deceive anyone when I require help.

This is what I believe is to be the issue. I think there is some default program handling occurring that I'd just need to break or reassign. After I disabled the FF flag it worked perfectly in FF...I still need to delve deeper into the protocol association for Windows 10. Only day 5 of use with it.

Files so far are: .mp3, .mkv and .mp4. Have not had it happen or tried with any other type of media file.

Downloading programs - like steam, battle.net etc etc all works perfectly fine. Media files just want to open and play in the browser player.

Does it work in any Website, or only specific one?
How it works in IE (not Edge)?
I had similar problems with Chrome and Win7. Don't remember details, possibly problem is with system default handling of metafile data.

In Chrome try:
chrome://settings/content
(Unsandboxed plugin access and Automatic downloads options)

I'll be honest I have not tried it in I.E - did not even know it still existed on Windows 10? Thought it was Edge by default. I'll go check.

It has the same behavior in Chrome and FF. In FF I "fixed" it by disabling the media.play-stand-alone flag. Unfortunately Chrome does not have a similar hidden preference setting to tweak.

It could be that the latest browser's default HTML5 player or flash plugin can automatically play those extensions where they previously couldn't.
