When MS releases a new build do they just patch the old one or is it a large 2 to 3 gig download again?

I believe that new builds are incremental updates, so you're not downloading the whole image, but it's still quite big.

Depends if it's just a point update from 10586.103 to 10586.104 then it's just an accumulative Windows update but if you go from build 10240 to 10586 then it's a full update.

Yeah, big version changes are usually the full installer. It's frustrating, but I can get around that by downloading the ISO myself.
