This one's bitten more than a few Windows 7 users with Avast the past 24 hours. So in case you encounter it or somebody you know has it ...

Windows 7 suddenly starting throwing random blue screen of deaths. Does the user have Avast installed?
Update Avast and reboot. BSOD gone. Happiness!

Avast rolled out a bad definition and kept quiet while trying to fix it. In the meantime more than a few updated their systems. Some IT admins had their users in their ear today.

Only Windows 7 was affected.

I came across this with two separate people on the line. The first call saw me trying Kaspersky's free scanner, GMER etc. Finally a search hit upon the above. The reboot is not mentioned, but is ultimately what was needed after updating.

The second call saw me asking two questions: #1 which version of Windows? #2 do you have Avast? Thereafter asking them to update their Avast with the link and reboot. Followed by a wait till finally a relieved "Jaysus, you're clever!" compliment from the other side :D

Hope this helps somebody be spared from some misery of backouts etc.
