Windows 7 not installing any USB Flash drive drivers - Access Denied?

Sitting with a few HP N54Ls in the wild and they have mainly been trouble free from the get-go. The one Windows 7 machine presented with XBMC problems last week that turned out to be wacky permission settings that did not allow XBMC to update its own library from some random arbitrary date. Took ownership of the settings folder etc etc and everything was back on track.

Today I'm contacted because another Win7 machine is not picking up any USB flash drives all of a sudden (open to interpretation). Did the standard trouble shooting over the phone but had to remote into the machine in the end. Images edited as required:

First did a scan for new hardware:

But that failed:

Device manager does pick up the drives ("JumpDrive") but presents with a nice little yellow triangle. Tried to update the driver directly:

It searched for a driver online, found one, but got this error in the end:
Access denied.JPG

Access denied? A few hours of googling later points me to a ... permissions error. What is it with Win7 and permissions? I checked all the permissions mentioned, and then a few extra, but everything seemed 100% fine. What am I missing here? Anyone ever had a problem like this?

Have heard about this from other sources, apparently Microsoft screwed up the flash drivers in one of the recent updates.

One of the reasons I hate updates. Although how recent is this update you are talking about? Only saw two updates that were done before the user disabled the updates on this computer due to bandwidth constraints. Will look into this.

Check the USB settings in the BIOS

What exactly am I looking for?

Have you got UAC on? Running as a user or admin?

I recall that I killed UAC on install. Did not get any UAC popups while I was doing troubleshooting, so I assume it is off. Will check when I log in again later. Main user account is an administrator.

That USB is enabled and legacy is enabled.

Also get user to try another USB device, preverably known working.

USB is enabled. Will try to get the user to check for legacy. External 3TB drive is connected via USB already and working fine. Wireless keyboard/mouse is connected via USB and working fine. JumpDrive shown in OP works fine on other systems.

OP try this, remove flash drive-> open devices and printers-> right click on "Yourname-PC"-> goto device installation settings and set it like this.

RTM release that I downloaded with an OEM HP key the user had. Not so sure about the legitimacy of said key.

And is it fully updated?

Do you have a Anti Virus that is upto date and have you recently done a full scan?

I've been having the same problem with a Laptop of a client that has been running with no problem. Suddenly it will not install the USB Root Hub drivers. In fact everything as ld13 described. I feel with you mate.

I don't have a solution but I am astounded a the amount of jackass advice that this problem seems to generate.

ld13 has spotted it properly and it is a Windows permissions problem. In my case the culprit is a fully legal Windows 7 Home Basic.

This has nothing to do with BIOS settings, with trying another device or with the Windows being downloaded from anywhere. I've been struggling with this problem for a week now and I see this kind on non-advice popping up on all kinds of forums together with the usual "reload Windows" guff. It's verbal fluff, not help. I just spent 5 minutes reading a thread on a forum where the theory for this issue was that the motherboard was the wrong one. Geez. Don't people think any more?

ld13 all I can tell you is this

I suspect that trouble is caused by a virus/malware or a buggy program/update. Trying to guess which permission is the culprit if all the obvious ones seem correct is almost impossible. In Home Basic there is no access to the Local Security Policy Editor. If you are able to access this tool you can at least check the permissions.

The other thing that nobody seems mention. Probably because it is unlikely but not impossible, is that the USB controller is blown. Easy enough to test, boot with a Windows PE or Linux bootable and plug in a USB drive.

Or you could always do what the hack mechanics do and RELOAD WINDOWS!

From other forums.

Some more thoughtful advice- Use the administrator account (Bit obvious though).

Some useless advice- Try the MS Forums (a descent into hell and hours of wasted time)

Other issues? Related?

So I started out having the same problem. Critical update done on 05/23/2014. Came back to work the following Tuesday. Gives me the same access denied message. AND...I can't download updates. And I can't restore. Gives me an error message. I'm an admin. FRUSTRATED! My IT guy told me only option was to start all over. This wasn't what I wanted to hear. HELP!!!

You can try to make a new user account with admin privileges, login and see if the drivers install.
