Windows 7 not updating

Hi all
This is on a Dell laptop with Windows 7 professional 64 bit.
When checking for updates it just does nothing, shows no progress as if getting stuck.
I read online to go to "troubleshooting" and select Windows Update, that this will run through a process which will fix the issue, but if doing this it also seams that this process is getting stuck, I left it for more than a hour and it does nothing, no progress, no errors.

I recall something similar also happened to another machine of mine a few months ago, where Windows update didn't work, I can't remember what I did to fix the problem and whether I did anything to fix it at all.

Any ideas?

On a clean Window 7 SP1 64bit I install the following:

Windows6.1-KB3020369-x64
Windows6.1-KB3138612-x64
Windows6.1-KB3145739-x64
Windows6.1-KB3153199-x64

Restart, then I install the big rollup that has all updates to about April 2016:
AMD64-all-windows6.1-kb3125574-v4-x64
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=3125574

Restart, then I install the small rollup for July:
Windows6.1-KB3172605-x64

Then I run Windows Updates, it quickly finds the other updates not covered (about 60).

If one doesn't do the above it takes ages (sometimes over 24hours) to find the windows updates.

It's been happening to me for a long time now. Even the big "SP2" update refuses to install at all.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll try them out tomorrow if I have time.

I haven been having the same issue. I was wondering what was going on. I've left it on for a week and nothing happens

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

Try deleting all the folders in that folder, empty recycle bin, reboot PC and search for updates.

I'm out of ideas, did everything suggested and more including leaving it to search for updates for at least 24 hours, still nothing.

I followed these instructions. It worked perfectly.

Thanks very much

I spent the better part of 2 weekends trying to sort out two separate PCs on which I did fresh installs.

I agree with supersunbird , you should do the roll-up updates and the patches. I also found that this helps: http://download.wsusoffline.net/

Yes. The moment you fix the multiple locations for settings/control panel and the clunky nature of the Win10 settings screens we will move right over... thnxbai
Luckily I don't spend my time staring at settings/CP all the time. Windows search/Cortana wil take care of that anyway.
