Hi All

I will be getting adsl uncapped soon and plan to have an old laptop running 24/7 (Mecer, Celeron, 1GB, 40GB hdd, Windows 7 Ultimate)
Windows 7 is installed already and runs fine - what I would like to know is after I set the laptop up with queued downloads in say flashget or grabit - can I put the laptop to "Sleep" until I check I it again and will it carry on receiving data from the router?

In these times when we need to save electricity I'm searching every option to save money and not spend excess money on a laptop that is just downloading off a slow 384k line.

The device will bring the pc out of sleep mode surely? Charge your laptop at work and only use the battery at home :) Sneaky FTW+

No dude you can't download while the pc sleeps. That's like eating while you sleep.

Possible afaik, you need a special network card for it though. I think it was on slashdot.

Not worth it imo.

Did some googling - some guy was downloading via emule - pc went into hibernation and when he checked the next morning it had received 3gb?
Guess it needs to be tested - one way to find out.

Impossible. The PC is effectively off while it is hibernated. When the system restarts, it loads what was in RAM back from the disk and resumes where you left off.

There are several advantages to choosing sleep over shutting down:

When Windows is asleep, it can still download and install updates and perform other routine maintenance tasks. For this reason, some companies require employees to put their computers to sleep rather than shut them down when going home for the evening.

more than likely just the update processes that run in the background... I personally doubt that you will be able to download data while the pc is asleep... unless your download manager can run as a service in the background..
but I could be wrong.

I have a slow line 384k and SAOL uncapped = +-2.5gb a day only - not that much a 2x Top Gear 720p episodes.
I'm pretty sure that most people with 384k lines leave their pc running 24/7 - if the line's where faster then sure no one would need to run 24/7 but if are paying a large some of money for it, well then?

Why not spend R500 on an old PC? Use that for downloading?

It's perhaps beside the point but I wouldn't leave a notebook on for 24/7...

Is it bad to leave a laptop on for that long?

Notebook batteries don't like that too much. Once of the reasons why they normally only give a 6 month guarantee / warranty for them.

When I was living in England I left a Dell D600 on 24/7 for about a year straight and it's still working 4 years later. It should use less electricity as well.
