Windows Phone 8, Windows Phone 7.8 support ends in 2014

MS has said over and over again that support for a windows phone version lasts 18 months from its release date. Why is everyone suddenly shocked?

All WP8 phones will also be upgradeable to WP9 iirc.

If you can upgrade to Win 9 it wouldn't matter but unfortunately it can't. That's where iOS and even Android with rooting is better.

Well that we will have to wait and see if its true. The same was said about WP7 and we all know what happened there.

As for the 18 months thing, agreed we all knew that bit.

Yes, makes you worry when 7.8 can't be upgraded to 8 and then you have to believe that 8 can go to 9..

8.0 in it's current state will end support then, "Blue" as it is currently known will be pushed to all WP8 devices when it is released. Whether "Blue" is 8.1, 8.5, 8.? or 9.0 know one but MS knows currently.

"Blue" will then have 18 months support before it is dropped.

"Blue" will also most likely be released for their entire eco system (WP,RT and x86) bringing them closer together and will most likely be considered as Windows 8 Service Pack 1/Feature Pack 1

Yes, because obviously 7.8 is closer to 8 than 9 is due to 8-7.8 being smaller than 9-8.... It is an arbitrary versioning system....

The next iteration of WP will come to WP8 devices. <- that's a period

Well still beats android by far I'm still waiting for m Jelly Bean update for my Xperia Go not only Jelly Bean is a year old but Key Lime pie is already on the way

Well if all WP8 phones are upgradeable (free?) to WP9 then this is a non issue

I have little sympathy for people that dont apply upgrades

For me a phone should
- Receive minor updates almost immediately on release
- Receive major updates no later than about a month after release (which implies for 2 years after the phone is taken off sale)
- That updates should be received for at least 2 years after the phone purchase

Not many phone manufacturers achieve this.
I hope Windows Phones are achieve this (quite possible given their reference designs and minimum requirements

I cant stand the idea of a phone that is stranded out of the starting blocks which happens all to frequently

Um there was 7.0 that received the NoDo update, then 7.5 which was known as Mango, then several smaller updates then finally 7.8 as it is similar to 8.0 but the phones themselves lack certain hardware requirements to run full blown 8.0

8.0 probably won't be receiving an update straight from 8.0 to 9.0 there will be smaller version increments along the way with the first of them being "Blue" which hasn't received a version as yet.

The biggest problem currently is operators not approving the updates to be pushed out to the WP devices, Vodacom is already 2 updates behind on the Lumia 620 and one update behind on the 820 and 920

Sure you can flash it to your phone manually but then you lose everything on the phone.

These updates also relate only to the OS portion of the phone, Nokia normally provides firmware updates for their phones for about 3 years after they were launched.

By my calculations, WP7.x would then have received official support for at least 42months by September 2014.

WP8 is likely to follow the same route.

Like WP7.x, WP8 will probably receive a major upgrade in a couple of months to WP8.5. Then increamental upgrades for a year followed by WP8.9 towards the release of WP9.

So, the fact that WP8 is only being supported until June 2014 doesn't tell the entire story about WP8. It is WP8.0 that is being spoken about because it is the one that is out so far.

WP8.5 to be released in September 2013 (6 months from now) will receive 18mths of support from September 2013.

WP8.9 to be released in March 2014 (12 months from now) will receive 18months of support from March 2014.

This means WP8.x will receive support until at least September 2015.

For now, WP8 (the one WP8.x version available) will receive support till June 2014.

Can't tell your tone here, but the point is it would really suck to get a Win 8 phone and find out you can't upgrade like many 7.x users did.
