Microsoft has admitted it is investigating reports that a recent Windows Vista security update causes havoc with some USB devices, but the software giant is yet to provide a fix for the cock-up.

The Windows Defender update was released last week, but some unfortunate Vista customers have claimed that their USB mice and keyboards among other devices refuse to work after the update is installed on their computers.

Does not sound so good....

That's what you get when you post every Register/Inquirer anti-Vista story.

Haha, you even get comments like this over there: "My experience was that service pack 1 did appear to have a beneficial effect. It stopped the PC crashing every 5 minutes, but many many many bugs still remain."

There you go, Vista crashes every 5 minutes. I can hardly find any bugs that effect me... well I can't even think of one. Not according to the internet though.

Yeah it's sad that so many people have valid and legitimate problems with Vista while other people the fault is either old drivers, old bios or just an oversight on their part, but it all gets blamed on Vista... Either way must start a thread to report Windows 7 problems now. Believe it or not by the time even beta 1 is out it'll have 1,000 posts :p

wow. remind me not to read the register...

an update killing USB DRIVERS happened a few months ago and there was an update fix released for it.

I only noticed when my camera was no longer recognised. after a bit of google the problem was solved.

i remember when i had i to buy a whole new scanner after applying xp's first service pack. woes of technology.

I've mentioned this before, 80% of all my Vista problems is related due to poor manufacturer drivers (Nvidia being the main culprit) and poor software development from software manufacturers.

If I had the money to buy a complete new system today, I'd do it and use Vista on it, but I'd make very sure that the parts have updated Vista drivers and good Vista support.

I have to report a Nvidia Geforce 6600 WHQL driver to them again, they fixed it in one release, but the December release was stuffed again, it's such a schlepp I haven't had the time for it.
