Windows XP is well and truly dead

Always ran flawlessly for me, even when keeping the same installation and switching hardware constantly over a long period of time, never let me down as win7 did.

We don't even speak of how bad Win8 and 10 are.

Win 8.1 is decent, don't want to know Win 10 problems ... , but damn, no drivers for Win XP, is a bugger, for new hardware.

Security risk, probably 80+ percent of the malware out there will not run on it, not that there are no real bad boys out there that will, simply because the systems the malware requires does not exist on XP. But a risk still, yeah.

Thought about this as well, however, if someone were to specifically target your system or XP systems it would be quite a bit easier than on more modern OS's

Still using it, albeit as a virtual machine in parallels. But that won't last long, as we're replacing the ancient hardware soon, so no more Visual Studio 2005 C++ kak en hare

If you are specifically targeted, then you need active defense, passive, just will not cut it. Regardless of operating system, or operating system version.

The golden years - it was supported that long because MS has very little control of the OS, not the case with WIN 10 which is becoming a cloud OS/ - OS as a service type thing.

Because the software we use is windows based. And can only run on Windows XP. The newer software costs in the region of R50K. Not worth the while for an instrument that in essence outputs two 4-20mA signals.

Maybe cause you had no choice for 6 years? Initially XP was also just a buggy mess it took a few releases to fix it.
Vista actually wasn't that bad, people disliked it because it was a big departure from XP and yet they loved 7 which was the same OS with a bit of polish?
Yes 8 and 8.1 were a real mess with that weird ui they tried that thankfully didn't last.

No, Vista was awful because is was broken. It had compatibility issues with everything and even doing simple tasks were an issue. They fixed a lot of Vista's issues with SP1, but by then most people had turned on the OS
