I'm getting a laptop with a built in wireless card, and my one friend that lives on the other side of the house (3 walls to pass through) has his own laptop and wants the internet, now my room is the only one with a nice spot for connection etc...

is it worth it getting a wireless PCI card for him to connect to my laptop for the internet or won't it work?

I believe you will need a wireless router hooked up to your modem, from there both of you can tap into the internet.

Indoors a wi-fi signal should reach 50 meters depending on the brand of the wi-fi card, personally I prefer the USB stick type that comes with a USB extention cord, that way you can "search" for the best signal by looking like a fool with your arm in the air.

It will work exactly like a normal network card, you can go the simple route of pointing his gateway to your laptop, using an Ad-Hoc connection between the machines (equivalent of crossover cable) .
You might find that your PC's can't communicate over the distance (due to cr@ppy internal antennas on the laptop, in which case, you simply put an access point between both of you, and everyones happily surfing away!
In regards to a wireless AP with built in router.
I've been using one for the last week or 2, and reverted back to using a gateway PC for my routing, and the AP only as an access point, the only reason is that my reception is very poor, and tend to disconnect frequently, the routers PPPOE got very confused with all the disconnects, and often lost track of whether I modem was connected or not, and frequently needed resetting.
My advice, get the PCI card, it is definitely usable, althought you might later find that you also have to get an AP, but that should be no problem , since you're LOADED.

Hi noone, I am assuming that 1) you are asking about a wireless "PCI" card for an existing desktop PC to be used as the sharing point, and 2) that your MyWireless modem is connected to this existing static desktop PC, and 3) that you would also want to use the wireless in your new laptop to access the internet? If his laptop doesn't have built-in wireless, then he would need a PCMCIA or USB wireless adaptor, or if supported internally by his laptop, it could be miniPCI or internal USB (normally needs to be fitted by the manufacturer).

You can use a wireless adapter as an "Access Point" in "Ad-hoc" mode, but getting a proper "Access Point" (to ICS the modem from the Desktop PC with software firewall), or a wireless router (to share via the router with hardware firewall) would be more convenient, and not that much more expensive.

Depending on the distance, 3 internal brick walls can be usable with wireless. However, the only way to be sure is to try it. The signal strength probably won't be great and thus the connection speed will be low, but fast enough for internet access.

Alternatively, it may also be possible to just run a LAN cable to his room through the ceiling, then all you would need is a cheap switch/hub and some cable and connectors.

Thanks for the feedback, no I'm not using PC for wireless (why buy a PCI card for my PC when the laptop already has one built in) the modem would be connected to my laptop (with the wireless 802 thingy)

We can't just use a lan cable through the ceiling because its not our ceiling TO play around in (we both rent with 3 other guys and wires aren't an option)

Also, I dont want him to go spend x amount of money no a wireless card just to find out it won't work... the distance between my room and his is about 20 meters.

Any more ideas (with prices?)

Simple, get a mate with a wi-fi enabled laptop, to come past, or loan you his laptop, place laptop2 in other room, and see if you can talk to it from yours, if this works, it will definitely be worthwhile for your flatmate to spend R350 on a wi-fi card.
with a distance of only 20m, and 3 walls, I don't think you should have any problem.

I seem to have completely misunderstood what you want, I thought you had a laptop wif a wireles fingy, and your mate had a desktop, so surely you need a pci wireless fingy.
20m really doesn't seem like much distance, but the thickness of wall etc makes a diff, so I can't guarentee it will work, in regards to pricing :

I have to speak to the guy to see if he's interested in paying half for the router or not. Er... you do realize I'm going to connect the Sentech modem to the router?

Be careful of those brick walls, most 802.11 claims are based on N American type timber frame buildings YMMV
