Hi everyone,

I have got ADSL at home connected to a Billion router which in turn connects to several computers on my home network. What I want to do is in addition to the wired network I also want to have wireless access at home for several notebooks.

I dont want to get a wireless router because I still want to be able to have certain PC's on a wired network. I dont know a lot about this stuff but will something like this work for what im looking for:

http://www.simplicity.co.za/Network....html?osCsid=fd101cbf0638c23e228ce60ccd54f377

or

http://www.take2.co.za/electronics-linksys-wap54g-wireless-g-access-point-802-11g-562082.html

Will these access points allow for several notebooks to connect to the adsl network and then to the internet or to other pc's on the wired network?

How exactly would this work because from what I can gather an access point like this has one port into the adsl router so does that mean only one notebook would be able to be wireless?

If these are not going to work, then please could someone advise on what I would need to get so that I can have my pc's all connecting using the normal ethernet to the adsl while also having a wireless network for multiple notebooks.

Also, will it be ok that I have a billion router but will have a Linksys access point?

Much appreciated.

not familiar with your billion router, i'm presuming it does not have wireless capability. In this case, all you need is to setup an AP on the wired side, then the lappys will connect through the AP to the ADSL/billion router.

both of those AP's in your links are fine. Your AP will be cabled to your wired nework, exactly the same way as you would connect another PC. Once that is up and running with all the IP's, gateways etc setup, you can connect wirelessly via the laptops... easy.

Yes that's what I was thinking but I just wanted to make sure before shelling out for the wrong stuff.

Essentially my billion adsl router (with no wireless capabilities) would connect directly to the outside, then I would plug an AP directly into the router which would broadcast a wireless signal that multiple laptops could connect to.

My main question is just to make sure that the AP will allow access to multiple laptops, not just one.

Thanks.

you dont have to plug the router and AP directly into eachother, the AP can be anywhere within the wired side. The AP will accept all your lappy's connections, unless you put mac filtering on th AP and or a select IP range that the laptop does not fall into. Best practice is WPA or WEP + mac filtering to prevent unwanted access. Takes a little time, but worth it.

Great, thanks for the replies.

Which out of the 2 links posted in my original post would you go for? ie: the linksys or the d-link?

I know that the Airlive 5460AP works 100% with the Billion routers. I helped another client a week ago to connect his 5460AP with his Billion 7402G router. I configured the 2 devices to connect wirelessly.

I reckon that you want to link the 2 devices with a lan cable? Make sure that your Airlive 5460AP is in the same IP range a the router (e.g. Billion router 192.168.1.x - Airlive 5460AP 192.168.1.x).

Would you please kindly provide me with the exact Billion model device you are using so that i can have a picture of the network design you want to archive?

I have the Billion 5200 4 Port (No Wireless) ADSL router. I want to do something similar to create the wireless network.

I want to buy something like the NetGear Wireless Access Point.

Just making sure.. with my billion modem in bridged mode.. if the laptops on the network can still connect using pppoe through the wireless AP.
