Wireless AP in Ubuntu

I just my new shiny Samsung Galaxy S2 and want to share my 3G internet with it. I've been all over the web trying to find a way to create a non ad-hoc wifi network for my S2 to connect to and I cannot get it right.

Most sites suggest using hostapd, but I cant seem to get that compiled let alone running. Installing it using "apt-get" doesnt seem to actually install anything, and building it from source is a mission as I cant seem to get the .config file working.

The second suggestion was putting the wifi card into "master" mode, but I that doesnt work either (Operation not permitted error), so I tried finding the latest drivers for my card, the Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000, and installed that, although I'm not sure if that was successful.

Any pointers in getting this going? To me, it should be possible as I've done it before in Windows using Connectify, so my wireless card should be able to do it...

You could also just plug in the USB cable and use tethering to share the connection with the PC.

Creating an ad-hoc network in Ubuntu should be as easy as pie:
1. Right-mouse click the NetworkManager icon (top right)

2. Select "Edit Connections"

3. Click the "Wireless" tab

4. Click "Add" to edit a new wireless connection

5. On the wireless dialogue give the connection a name, xxxx

SSID: "xxxx". The SSID will appear on the NetworkManager of your other Peers
Mode: Ad Hoc
BSSID: leave blank
MAC Address: leave blank
MTU: leave as automatic

6. Click "Apply"

7. Click "Close"

Now go to the phone and join the network.

Oops should have made it clear: I want to share my PC 3G internet (8ta 3G dongle) so that my Galaxy can use that internet.

It wont work creating an Ad-Hoc network as the Galaxy cant connect to it. It has to be an access point...

Only certain wifi cards have AP capability in Linux due to propriety drivers from vendors.

What chipset does your wifi use?

lsmod | grep ipw

If there is an ipw2100/2200 module then you are out of luck.

For ipw2100/ipw2200, unfortunately there is no way to use them as AP, but this can be done for ipw3945 and ipw4965, maybe ipw2915 too, which are pretty good cards anyway, using fully open-source iwlwifi drivers, but it can't be done with old Intel drivers with closed microcode.

Saw something about using Windows drivers (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper), would that bypass limit Linux has or not?

AFAIK from past experience ndiswrapper only offers basic connectivity and according to http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/ you should not need it.

I have no further experience on intel, you best bet would be to take this to the Ubuntu forums.
