I'm trying to setup a wireless network at home. This is my first stab at networking. I have tried a few things but doesn't seem to get it right. I have added the network via the wizard, set it up on the web interface for the router with the 64 bit key, entered it on the D-link prog. on the laptop, nothing.

Equipment:

PC with XP
Telkom 5102G
Netgear WG602 accesspoint (also available)
Laptop Windows 2000
D-Link DWL-G650 card

Could you guys please help me with this?

go and buy some cables

does 2kb download speed sound good to you?
maybe you'll get 7kb's who knows

Basically make sure that their IP's are in the same range (example: 192.168.1.xx)

Setup your Telkom ADSL modem Lan IP address to 192.168.1.1.
Enables its DHCP server to dish out IP's between 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.200
(it is the default gateway so if it asks for a default gateway Ip set it to 192.168.1.1)

Now setup your Netgear AP
Make its ip static = 192.168.1.2 (subnet mask= 255.255.255.0)
set its default gateway to 192.168.1.1

Under Wireless settings make sure you have selected the channel you want (channel 11)
Also under security set it to WEP, and tipe in a phrase, select 64bit encryption.

Did the D-link (pci card) come with some drivers and utils?
Install them, there should be some tool to scan for available networks, not sure where to set but make sure your set to the same channel (channel 11 - same as Access Point)

It then should pick up your AP, connect to it and tipe in your pass phrase.

a tip: disable the security options - WEP, WPA etc until you have everything working, then re-enable the security once its all talking!

WLAN can be frustrating at the best of times, but fantastic when it works:
You biggest drawback on your system is that you are using Win2000 on one of your pcs. If you cannot get this working, you may be better off using WinXP on both pcs - this is due to the wlan support and internet connection sharing available with XP.

A.
1. First install your Billion 5102G router to your PC by using the setup wizard. Make sure it works properly and that you can surf the internet.
2. Go to control panel, network connections, right click the ADSL connection and enable SHARING and ALLOW USERS TO ACCESS THIS CONNECTION

B.
1. Next install your Netgear access point on your PC. You may need to use the Netgear WLAN connection software instead of WinXP - this does not matter.
2. Go to control panel, network connections on the pc. On the menu on the left side, choose set up a home or small office network. Using the wizard - ignore disconnected hardware, choose this computer connects directly to the internet, choose your local area connection as your internet connection, choose your WLAN as the option to connect to other computers, give the computer a name, choose a workgroup (warning - this wizard defaults to mshome - i suggest you keep your workgroup as mshome for now), enable file and printer sharing, end the wizard.
If your computer freezes at this point, restart, re-run the wizard and choose THIS COMPUTER CONNECTS TO THE INTERNET THROUGH A RESIDENTIAL GATEWAY.

C.
Install your Dlink card and make sure it is working.
Not sure if you can find the network wizard on W2000. If you can repeat the above wizard instructions.

D.
Reboot pc frst, then laptop.
Use the WLAN software to connect to a WLAN network.
Surf away.

You DO NOT need to configure IP addresses manually. Leave it at automatic.

Also make sure you have working equipment.

I bought a Linksys 'kit' that came with a WRK54G router and a PCMCIA card. I fiddled 'til I was blue in the face - I then realised that the PCMCIA card was not working.

Took it back, got it swapped, and everything worked first try, with WPA set up.

It was the first DOA of Linksys equipment that they had - which surprised them, since it was usually DLINK that they had to swap out.

Btw - why are you using WEP? Generally, WPA-PSK is supposed to be more secure, and it's easier to setup.

Hope you get it sorted out

If everything works...

You have to make sure of the following then...
1. File and Printer sharing in enabled on the computers.
2. The folders that you want to access must be shared (right click, properties, sharing...)
3. The workgroup must be the same on both computers. Remember that the XP wizard defaults the workgroup to MSHOME - this is a flaw in the system - perhaps leave your workgroup as MSHOME for the time being.

Remember also that system files, hidden files can be a challenge to copy over networks - copy over small amounts of data at regular intervals until you are confident in your system.
