Sorry for this really stupid question, but I have always wondered why they call it wisdom teeth (or in Afrikaans, verstand tande). I mean, it's not like you loose some wisdom or knowledge when you remove them!

Is it maybe because they are so deep in your mouth and come out so very late in your life?

:confused::confused:

Yeah, I think it's because by the time they appear you're supposed to be wise and mature :)

It's cause when they come out you get wiser. There is a special nerve that they block that leads directly to the brain. As soon as they are pulled out it allows that nerve to communicate with the brain, which in turn unlocks "processing power".

Pooky, your nerve must have been connected to your ass because you are talking out of it :p
These teeth are associated with wisdom because they appear during the late teens or early twenties, when a person is physically mature (supposedly!!)

I tend to agree it comes out late when you SHOULD have wisdom... but unfortunately most don't...

Because.. when they dun take them yur becoming like yur uncle Cletus, and as his mama saids, all good doggie must stay on the porche! :)

or... when all else fails... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisdom_teeth

They are called wisdom teeth because usually they come in when a person is between age 17 and 21 or older—old enough to have supposedly gained some "wisdom".
IE NOT POOKY :)
