Wisdom teeth, why that name?

Sorry for this really stupid question, but I have always wondered why they call it wisdom teeth (or in Afrikaans, verstand tande). I mean, it's not like you loose some wisdom or knowledge when you remove them!

Is it maybe because they are so deep in your mouth and come out so very late in your life?

Me neither. They came out properly, and didn't grow sideways or down or against the other teeth. Lucky us.

In that case I'm ownage.... or half at least. The top ones and a bottom one have come out once and the last one is like PMS- haunts me once a month

They are called wisdom teeth because usually they come in when a person is between age 17 and 21 or older—old enough to have supposedly gained some "wisdom".
