I think you do need a license once you start routing internet over your network. Hence the actual wugs not allowing internet to be shared on their network.

You could however check if he is actually licensed :)

If you do internet of any form over wireless you need a VANS license. The wug's don't do internet, or provide commercial services. That is why they are exempt from the vans licenses.

Yup you only need a licence if you are broadcasting outside a certain spectrum or routing internet.

I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think you need a licence to extend your office LAN to your boss' house (by whatever means - fibre or wireless). That network having access to the Internet is irrelevant, the key thing being: you're not reselling any network access.

Again, I'm not sure, but IIRC a WUG operates under an licence exemption in terms of the act, but that exemption needs to be formally applied for.

I would keep the two networks separate, even if that means installing routers at yours your boss' houses to split WUG and Internet traffic over the different networks. Maybe even 2.4 for one and 5.8 for the other. Keep us informed of progress.

You may distribute internet wirelessly (for free) if you don't cross municipall boundaries?:D

Thats a bummer, how much does this license cost and how long does it take to apply for it? I dont understand why i need a license if im not selling the internet.

If i realy must get the license then i would gladly do that, but i need help getting it. If someone can help me who went through the steps then that would be great.

My wug started this way. First i got a link between my house and the office. To expand my wifi i told the boss that i can give him internet at his home so then he does not have to pay for it. So i ordered two 15dbi 5ghz 120' sectors and two 12dbi 2,4ghz omni's :D :D .That made the wisp very pissed-off that im taking away his client, but i had to make a plan to exspan my wifi. I was planning to start a wug almost a year ago and hopyfully i will launch it in 2 months.

1. hhhmmm so if i need a vans lisence to send internet data over my wifi, does mesh networks also need it? For example Scarborough Wireless User Group (www.swug.za.net). hmmm i see that they are also non-profit. They only ask monthly donations to pay the ISP. What im thinking is that if they can do it then maybe i can also..

2. Another thing that im wondering about is what if one member on the wug have a adsl router and another member uses his adsl account to connect to that router. hmmm?????

Im hoping to get answers to all the questions im asking in this reply. Thanx

Yeah call his bluff - he will retract unlesss he has one.
I reckon their are some operating without licenses too ? Very risky
Maybe under another company name, with no formal agreement ?

@google prompt enter the following
site:icasa.org.za "WiSP name"

Go apply for your license exemption from ICASA and then you will know, by the conditions of your exemption, what you are and are not allowed to do. Then just live inside those rules.

Best to play inside the rules - then you'll be safe and the big boys can't hurt you.

And good luck.

Who is this WISP giving you all this hassles?:D

A local wisp.I had internet with him when i got my first antenna. He asked me R200 for 5 gig, but i got smarter and told the bosss that i can give free support from home and monitor the server at work. :D :D I left out the part about giving myself free internet to play online games :D:D

Did you get internet from him wirelessly and needed an antenna?Which does not sound bad at all!So where do you get internet from now?:D

Yes i got internet from him. I bought a 24dbi grid from him. He gave me a discount, he normallly asks R350. But the internet was slow and high pings.

Im getting internet directly from the office. They have a 1mb fiber line so my speed is very fast. ;);)

1Mb fibre, nice!!

I can think he'd be pissed off. hehehe:D

Yes i usually play black hawk down in the evenings, my lowest ping is 233ms to the UK. I also think he is pissed becos he made R350@month for 3gig, the boss did not even know about this.
