Anyone have comments on : 1) Interference affecting connection 2) Will the Wisp install an external antennae for you if this is required & what cost ?

Anyone has uncapped? Wifi seems cheap if you can download at max speeds on 64k or 128k.

R 199-00 Excluding line rental of R 111-90. This means an all-inclusive price of R 311.

Wired is still king.

Although there are instances where wireless will be the better choice, it all depends.

Competition is always a good thing; no matter if it is coming from Neotel or a Wisp … Telkom needs to be taught a lesson.

 DO NOT GET AEORSAT!

+ uncapped

-limited ftp [can't get to saix FTP]
-heavily shaped
-slow daytime speeds [about 4kbs on 64k]
-very bad customer service
-not for gaming
-higher speeds just cost too much!

IMO bite the bullet and get this  or get telkom  either way you are pretty stuffed... :(

I want a cable running into my house. Copper or fibre from me to the site that I am accessing. What are all the WISPs going to do once all the spetrum is saturated?

I hate WISP's with much passion.
I also wouldnt take into account the advertised speeds, because they are not advertising the contention ratios. Try splitting an IS1024k uncapped line between 10 people and let me know if you end up wanting to hang yourself...

Yeh, one has to look at the bandwidth quality. I know some of those wisps on that list that push everything through IS uncapped. I also know some of the wisps on that list that push everything through regular Telkom ADSL. There are also some wisps on that list that purchase legit bandwidth.

Any chance that some wisp will come along that doesn't start rolling out in the main areas and never reach the outskirts?
but then again speed of 64k and 128k against 400kb, dont no
Get about 100k lately on Vodacom 3G so not much difference in that department. Still a lot you could do with it can get 20GB out of it if set up on a pc doing all the downloads.

Why do everyone forget about the extra line rental charge. As long as Telkom forces us to pay for two services when only using one it is only fair we include both when talking about internet.

EDIT @ phiber: I can get 2GB on Vodacom for R257, phone line included. ;)

Interesting, I suppose this explains why everyone is using WISP's over ADSL. :/ Because no one in SA has a phone line so we have to pay an extra R111 just to use ADSL.

Unfortunately ADSL is the better option, almost always cheaper despite what this article says and much more reliable/faster.

EDIT: The obvious thing to do wrt analouge line rental is just add a note at the end of the comparisons telling people that line rental of R111 only applies if you don't have a phone line already, no point confusing readers. Including it is hardly accurate.

Ok Prometheus, the article should then state that. Its part of the package! I also hate telkom, tho dont make them seem like bigger crooks then they actually are!

Have to agree that wired is superior. Like the article states WISPs are popular is areas that don't have ADSL [yet]. So basically they don't have a choice:p

I was just trying to make the point that things are not always that simple. If we say what other services are included we should say that with every service and we don't. It pretty much depends on the context. With the context being internet and with Telkom fixed line residential numbers dwindling most people that want adsl would have to fork out the analogue rental charge above the adsl charge and not actually use it. We shouldn't forget that in other countries you get your adsl part included with the analogue part so the total charge is a fair comparison. The only need to mention it would be not to confuse the user who tends to add that part after the comparison anyway. It would be easy for Telkom to avoid the confusion and seem like their not the big crooks they really are by either not charging the extra fee or to separate the two services.
