Tokyo Sexwale's "witchcraft" comments, which have elicited scathing criticism from the Congress of the People, had been distorted by translation into English, he told SAfm on Tuesday.

"Well, I stand tall having said the following... you must understand that this is a question of getting lost in translation," the ANC NEC member told the radio station.

"We speak rich African languages, mine, Sepedi, Sesotho, Sexhosa. And there will always be the danger... [to try] to make political capital, to reduce very rich expressions said in African languages to a kind of kitchen English.

Amazing isn't it, this rich and well spoken businessman can't express himself in English? For some reason I don't believe it.....

Hmmm - and there I was thinking that he had said it in english.

Sexwale you are an idiot!

See! Even that got garbled in the translation. What I meant was that there are rocks with more intelligence and there are things living at the bottom of ponds with more personality. And those pond dwelling things - you can use some of their eyes in witchcraft.

I'm sure COPE will understand the African language you spoke in. Repeat it to them, and let them decide for themselves if it was misquoted or "lost in translation".

Instead of just denying, how about clarifying what you tried to say?

Well I think he is speaking the truth, whenever someone from the ANC opens their collective big fat mouth, all I ever hear is "Blah blah blah yadda yadda blah blah blah"

remember zuma gave a similarly lame excuse when caught out saying he'd knock out a gay person if they ever came close to him! he'd made the comment in zulu (& was correctly interpreted), but said it was lost in translation...

So if it all gets lost in translation, I seriously think that we dont need folk who express themselves so poorly in positions of power???

they are not poor expressors of themselves.
they are just playing to the gallery. they say something stupid to please the current audience and when it goes out there they can then get all politiciany about it. but the intended effect has been had by then. their audience at gatherings hardly follow the mainstream news or internet debates like this!

Defies logic..its like trying to understand all those people who still flock to Mugabe's rallies..trying to understand how these sickos think might lead to brain aneurysms..I dont recommend it :(
