with regards to better speeds

For MW 128 users who reported good speed since Friday.

Have you found that these good speeds tend to last for a day or less and then drop off to the usual 28-40kbs?

For example the whole day today my speeds were fast. On average I was getting 10-12kB/s... in some cases even higher... then at about 5pm these dropped and have stayed at a pathetic
40kbs.

I am under the impression that they may be doing tweaks n things but would like to know what other MW 128 users are experiencing.

Thanks

I've had one extremely good day in the last few weeks. I only tried it on p2p since the stuff that I'm looking for is not on ftp or http and always international. I managed to get 300MB international over a 12hr period for one day only running at the max that my 128 connection should allow for. The next day I definitely had a cap on as the speed hit 4.8 to 5KB/s max.

I did download a 700MB file from ftp.is.co.za last night. Average = 13.2KB. I'm more than happy with that as it is what I'm supposed to get from IS. (being in the same bed as sentech) International I'm not sure about since p2p speed depends a lot on how popular the file that you're downloading is. I still have to download something big from international on ftp.

Since Saturday, I have been mostly at 12.4 kB/s (Local and Internationally) Solidly (except for the international link failure last night)

At last I'm getting what I've been paying for!

Please keep this level of performance up and you will have a happy user base that will grow.

128 package on tower 50 (out of Sentech map zone by far but with BIG 28dbi antenna)

Solid 12k since Saturday, but bittorrent d/l's still suck - maybe it's my firewall config, because even with heavily seeded torrents I get max 4k

bb_mat,you should use port forwarding when using a firewall with bittorent...your speeds will improve then

Do you mind explaining why?

Thanks

I've got port forwarding configured for 6881:6999

Anyway, not that it matters now - Sentech have just clicked the switch called "Modem Emulation for bb_matt" in thier NOC ;) - my "speed burst" over the weekend has come to a halt again - YAY !

join the club bb_matt...

I am so sick of this ****. Yesterday I was flying... my modem was melting with the speed... I mean some speed test were giving me 158kbs on a 128kbs... it was insane...

Now I am lucky if I pull a 4Kb out the hat... Bit Torrents were flying a while ago when Inet speeds were crap but now everything is pretty much retarded.

Why the fsck cant Sucktech just pull their heads out there asses and stick with one solution. One thinks that they just flicking swicthes and not knowing whats going down.

Even with apparent huge losses of MW subscribers you would imagine better net speeds and that doesnt even happen you gotta ask yourself just how long does it takes these idiots to do anything...

Sucktech are making telkom an attractive proposition... come on Sucktech... you have shown us what you got now dont pretend you dont read these forums... get your asses into gear and FIX what we PAY for.

Thankfully I'm not a Sentech customer but you guys should not settle for 12-13 KB/s local bandwidth on your "128" package, you should be striving for at least 15 KB/s. Remember the modems can theoretically handle 3mbps and tcp/ip overhead does not consume 20% of your bandwidth.

I know, one step at a time, but just keep it in mind [:)]

I think we're just so thankful when we do get decent speeds above 4Kb when dont look at the finer details...

Fact is they cant even give us one solid week of decent service.... the bastareds should have made sure they knew what they were doing before they sold us the lies that they did.

I think Sucktech is possibly the greatest joke and what makes it funnier in a depressing way is that these idiots intend to set up a cellular freaking network... even though they cant get a simple network like this working...

I suppose next they gonna blame US sentech users for their failure to deliver a proper cellphone product.

SENTECH: Yes the problem we are encountering with cell phones cuting out is that some Sentech Pray as you GO memebers are abusing their cell phones by making too many calls at peak times.

uh huh...

Make sure you use your cellphone by a window and that it is not raining...

hrmmm

have you tried moving your cellphone to another area... (yeah how about up your ass)

argh!.

yup brain implosion...
I shall now click on Submit and watch my broadband connection post this with a blistering 2Kb speed....

Watch out 26.6 modem users... I have sucktech...

Last night around 10pm my international bandwidth dropped to 8kB/s for about an hour.

This morning it's back to 12.7 so I am still a happy camper!

Sentech it's now time to ensure that the international pipe is large enough to support the demand (24 by 7) that we the users who pay your salaries are paying for.

The idea of a firewall is to block ports not normally used to prevent intrusion, hence the name firewall.
If you have applications that need to get data from a specific port, then you need to let your firewall know which port it needs to open for the data to get through.

Brolloks, what I meant was, why would opening ports on the firewall improve download speeds? The firewall lets traffic on a certain port through or it doesn't, which should not have an impact on speed. If people connect to me to offer me data, I would understand that, but it doesn't work that way (thankfully).

I have not noticed any speed difference between opening and closing the relevant ports for ctorrent. The only thing I can see closing the ports preventing is someone connecting directly to me. Which comes down to ethics of using torrents.

I don't know about the torrent setups but on edonkey you cannot connect to all users if you're behind a firewall with the relevant ports closed. The result is fewer users to download from and directly affecting the speed that you can download at.

International seems to be ok as well (22/09/2004 @13:20) Busy downloading from ftp.spec.org ad spec.ir.miami.edu
5 threads @ average of around 6K/s. Very spiky but it hits 13K/s every now and then.

Brolloks, I suppose the client/peer you're connecting too can try to connect back and deny you if it cant - to prevent freeloading. Sounds feasible. I haven't played with edonkey yet. Between my torrents and LimeWire pro I'm pretty happy :)

All this talk of opening ports is only half of the story, the suggestion was of port forwarding, which is something necessary when using a computer, not directly connected to the internet, but connecting through a Firewall/Nat gateway.
The problem is that even after opening the correct port, if your machine did not directly request the connection, a request will arrive at your firewall/gateway, and not now where to go, so port forwarding tells it, that any connection made on port x, must be redirected to your Filesharing PC.

In general, when using a p2p prog, I would recommend, checking the port it uses, and open that port for udp as well as TCP, if p2p prog is behind router/gateway (not directly connected) Forward that ports requests to p2p box, it should always show a marked improvement.
