WLAN - Policies / Laws

Hi.

Just want to try and get suggestions or comments with regards to policies of WLANs.

ie. If I have two buildings with WLAN between them on the same premises, surely that's fine, right? Now if I need to cross a roadway or another premises (or public place), surely there are some laws to govern this or would it just be ok to do it?

The WLAN SSID would be hidden and linked via WDS with sufficient encryption and such. Now who is to stop me from going 2km's down the road to another building or property. That's what I'm trying to figure out.

Thanks,

Beo... ;)

Look, technically it is illegal but nobody is going to hassle you with it.
Just keep it nice and clean not to interfere with anyone, ie , correct antennas, no boosting of signal, etc etc

It's not illegal. I don't know what the old law said to give people the idea that is was, but according to the new act, networks do/don't require licences depending on different factors.

Brief summary of the act.

Non commercial use - no licence.
Owner using his own network - no licence.
Selling access to a network or selling services over a network - need a licence.
Sending internet over a link - no licence (unless you're charging for it).

Read the act, and the regulations. I think dominic has the regulations on his site.

Dude in the dark days it was illegal to talk to your neighbour useing 2 cans & tightly pulled piece of string accross your fence. Only postoffice / telscum was allowed to provide that service.

Thanks for the info too guys. BeoTeK, I am just interested in copying what you have done and looking for further info as far as equipment is concern. The 24dbi directional antenna you mentioned is used for extending the AP right? The what to you need on the second building to access this AP, just normal PC wireless adapters or another antenna?

Ok. Can you then tell how will I connect the equipments and what other if any accessories will I need?

Not sure, never used them.
But from what I read, there is no other equipment other than some CAT5e cabling needed. It looks like they have built-in router functionality, with LED link and signal meter for easy setup.

So I still need two of these items?

EDIT: I see this has 20km+ range, that's wonderful! Will I need each device at a building where I want to connect to my network?

Can I create a type of network where I have two AP's at one place (with two devices) which distribute to two Stations (clients) at two different places?
