Its interesting how some people are blaming the media for blowing things out of proportion. The reports I've read so far, directly quote the mother & give her version of events. Why not call her or the son a liar? Or why not blame the media when you read about domestic violence or child abuse cases? If it really happened , why does it matter that its in the media now? Would those kids be bleeding less if the story wasn't in the Star?
I think in any situation if the following happens, it needs to be uncovered & stopped:
"His underpants were sopping with blood. What makes it worse is that they didn't give them anything to close the wounds so it kept on seeping and sticking to their underpants, so that every time they took the pants off it opened up the wound again," Kimber said.
If his own father or a nightclub bouncer did that to him, it would be seen as abuse or assault. Why is it not viewed as abuse/assault by some people, if its done on school premises? For tradition? Some traditions are just effed up & need to stop. Foot binding, killing baby girls & female genital mutilation are traditions in parts of China & Africa respectively. Should those just continue for traditions sake?
I'm not against school initiations at all, but I'm against things like this Parktown mess that doesn't do anything positive. I had initiations at school that were really character building. We did things like clean the grounds while wearing bin bags; calling prefects sir & ma'am; pack chairs & equipment for events & get signatures from 100 matrics on these boards we wore around our necks with our baby photos. We also did things like prepare food for the elderly people who played boules across the street from our school. Those things made pupils gain humility without destroying confidence, have pride in the school, get an interest in community service, take part in extramural events & get to know the rest of students better. I gained so much from those experiences.
